Job Overview
The primary purpose of the Document Review Specialist's role is to examine documents produced in pending litigation and cull the dataset down to a manageable number of relevant documents for counsel's review.
Duties
- Perform a page-by-page review and analysis of memoranda, correspondence, spreadsheets, e-mails and other types of documents in varying capacities for both plaintiff and defendant
- Duties required for plaintiff document review:
- Evaluate documents prior to production for relevance, responsiveness, privilege and confidentiality, and make necessary judgment calls as to each
- Determine which of these issues applies to each document and mark or code the document accordingly
- Identify documents that should be wholly or partially redacted, withheld from production or marked as confidential to maintain attorney-client confidentiality and work product privilege
- Create and edit privilege and redaction logs in accordance with specifications set by counsel
Duties required reviewing documents produced by defendants:
- Review documents for relevance and responsiveness
- Analyze case information to connect key documents to alleged facts or legal issues in the case
- Identify which documents relate to individuals who may testify about said documents or other relevant information
- Maintain spreadsheets summarizing relevant, responsive, privileged and confidential documents and key individuals
- Investigate sufficiency of privilege claims made by counsel
- Prepare and deliver regular case summaries and comprehensive reports to assist counsel in managing the review process
Additional Duties
- Research and analyze primary and secondary sources of law such as statutes, regulations, codes, constitutions, case law, scholarly articles and treatises
- Review deposition testimony and create summaries thereof for counsel
- Draft legal documents and pleadings, such as subpoenas, requests for production, petitions, memoranda, briefs, and motions
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate (JD) with high academic credentials
- Admitted to practice law by a state bar
- Thorough understanding of the litigation process with an emphasis on discovery, electronic production, document management and trial procedure
- Familiarity with court rules and procedures governing the review and production of electronic evidence during discovery
- Experience presenting such evidence at trial is strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Access, Excel and Outlook
- Experience creating and manipulating image-enabled document databases using litigation-specific computer applications such as Summation and Relativity
- Ability to synthesize complex information and manage large volumes of data for various cases
- Excellent problem solving skills, proficiency in oral and written communication and ability to work well under pressure
- Collaborative style
- Familiarity with the standard language for relational database management systems (SQL) is a plus
