Job Summary
Join our dynamic transportation team as a Student Transportation Van Driver. Van Drivers operate vehicles to transport students safely to and from school, field trips, and other school-related events. This position requires a dependable and responsible individual with a commitment to student safety and well-being. The Standby Driver will step in as needed to provide coverage for regular drivers and ensure the safe and efficient operation of the school transportation system. Once a permanent route becomes available, Standby Drivers will be offered the option to drive a permanent route (same route every day) if they demonstrate they are able to fulfill all job duties and follow company policies.

Hour Requirements & Compensation:

  • Work Schedule:
  • Monday through Friday
  • Reports to the office every day for a morning shift from 6:30 AM - 9:30 AM and an afternoon shift from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM waiting for a route to be assigned (must arrive on-time)
  • If a driver is more than 5 minutes late, the driver should NOT report for duty and will not be paid for that shift. Being on time is imperative. The office opens at 6:00 AM and drivers are welcome to come early.
  • Starting pay is $54 per shift regardless of if you end up driving a route or not (starting daily rate is $108 if driver works both shifts) – $18/hr at 6 hrs per day
  • Position is hourly paid and drivers are paid only when school is in session
  • If a route is assigned, drive the route (AM routes will clear no later than 9:30 AM and PM routes will clear no later than 5:00 PM)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate Type III vehicles in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.
  • Conduct a Pre-Trip Inspection on the minivan daily.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students during transportation, including loading and unloading students, securing children in their seats (if needed), and enforcing safety rules.
  • Maintain a clean and well-maintained vehicle, performing basic vehicle checks before and after trips.
  • Follow assigned routes and schedules
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, maintaining a professional and positive demeanor.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, company policies, and safety protocols.
  • Complete and submit required paperwork
  • Remain flexible and adaptable to changes in schedules and routes, filling in as needed for regular drivers.

Qualifications:

  • Have had a U.S. driver's license for at least 6 months (can be held in any state)
  • Currently must hold a valid MN Driver's License
  • Clean driving record with no serious violations (e.g., DUIs, reckless driving).
  • Ability to pass required background checks, DOT physical and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Previous experience in vehicle operation, particularly with school transportation, is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage student behavior in a positive and controlled manner.
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
  • Must be dependable and punctual, with flexibility to work on short notice.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and assist students with special needs, if necessary.
  • Ability to sit for long periods and operate a vehicle safely.
  • Capability to perform basic vehicle checks, such as checking tire pressure, fluid levels, etc.

Working Conditions:

  • Once given a permanent route, hours may vary depending on the needs of the school district (typically early mornings, afternoons, or occasional field trips).
  • Occasional exposure to weather conditions during pickup and drop-off times.
  • May involve working with students with special needs or challenging behaviors.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $ $19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 per week
