About This Role

Employment Type: Full-time

Location: Toronto, Canada

Location type: Hybrid (3 days at the office in Downtown Toronto - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday)

Timezone: Eastern Standard Time

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Frontend Engineer who wants to spend their time architecting and shipping. You will join a team of seasoned engineers where high autonomy and high technical standards are the default.

You will be working on a complex, data-rich frontend that powers a product with $5M ARR and growing. This role is for a builder who loves the challenge of scaling frontend systems, crafting excellent user experiences, and integrating AI-powered capabilities directly into the product.

What You Will Do

  • Architect & Build: Design and implement scalable, type-safe frontend applications using TypeScript and React, built on or similar frameworks. You will own features end-to-end in close collaboration with Backend and Product, from UI architecture to API contracts and data flow.
  • Build Complex, Data-Driven UIs: Develop high-performance, data-rich interfaces that handle real-time updates, complex workflows, and large datasets while maintaining excellent UX.
  • AI-Native Frontend Features: Integrate AI-driven experiences into the UI, including working with nondeterministic outputs, streaming responses, and human-in-the-loop workflows. This goes beyond UI polish - its about designing interfaces that make AI useful and trustworthy for users.
  • Own Your Code: We practice "You build it, you run it." You will ensure frontend systems are reliable, observable, and performant, participating in on-call rotations and incident response when frontend issues impact customers.

What We Are Looking For

  • TypeScript Authority: You have deep expertise in the TypeScript ecosystem and modern frontend tooling. You write clean, modular code that scales and is easy to test and maintain.
  • Frontend Systems Thinker: You think beyond components. You understand frontend architecture, rendering strategies (SSR, SSG, CSR), data flow, state management, and performance trade-offs at scale.
  • Strong UI Fundamentals: You have strong fundamentals in HTML, CSS, and modern styling approaches, and you care about UI quality and consistency.
  • AI-Augmented Workflow: You embrace AI as a non-negotiable part of modern engineering. You actively use tools like Copilot, Cursor, and LLMs to accelerate development, focusing on architecture, UX decisions, and complex problem-solving rather than repetitive coding tasks.
  • UX & Performance Minded: You care deeply about user experience and performance. You know how to measure, diagnose, and improve frontend performance across devices and network conditions.
  • Quality & Testing Mindset: You have experience with frontend testing strategies, from unit tests to end-to-end testing.
  • High Autonomy: You are comfortable in a startup environment where requirements evolve. You can take a business goal or product idea and translate it into a high-quality frontend solution with minimal supervision.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with or similar React frameworks.
  • Experience designing or contributing to design systems or component libraries.
  • Strong understanding of frontend performance optimization, including code-splitting, caching strategies, and rendering optimizations.
  • Experience with state management libraries (Redux, Zustand, Recoil, etc.).
  • Experience with analytics, A/B testing, or experimentation frameworks.
  • Practical experience integrating frontend applications with complex APIs or real-time systems.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical discussions, including architectural reviews and frontend best-practice alignment.

Why Join Bettermode?

  • Modern Stack: We keep our frontend architecture clean, scalable, and modern.
  • High-Density Talent: Work alongside peers who challenge you to think deeper about architecture, UX, and product quality.
  • Impact: Your work ships quickly, is visible to customers, and directly shapes how users experience the product.
