What will you be doing as our new Design Manager? In this role you will lead a multi‑disciplinary engineering team of 15‑20 staff to deliver engineering design solutions for the PFAS removal portfolio, consisting of five Water Treatment Works projects across the region. The solutions focus on dual‑stage Granular Activated Carbon treatment, with a combined portfolio value of approximately £155 million.
Key Accountabilities Design Management
Lead and manage engineering design delivery for the PFAS removal projects.
Develop and manage project plans covering scope, programme, cost, risk and resources.
Provide direction on treatment methods and process design with senior discipline engineers.
Assign competent engineering resources based on project complexity.
Implement design quality procedures to achieve a right‑first‑time philosophy.
Manage supplier and subcontractor design input, including engagement, selection and integration.
Project Delivery
Work collaboratively with other functions to achieve portfolio outcomes.
Seek opportunities to deliver affordability and value.
Support the development and management of project programmes to achieve milestones.
Produce designs that enhance sustainability.
Health & Safety
Undertake delegated duties of Principal Designer under CDM regulations.
Manage CDM competency assessments for the team and projects.
Ensure design risk assessments and health & safety documentation for the portfolio.
People/Team Development
Provide clear and visible leadership to the design team.
Undertake people management responsibilities, including performance management and personal development.
Allocate resources based on project priorities and complexity.
Support team development and recruitment efforts.
Transformation
Support the engineering team’s transformation and transition into AMP8.
Drive a culture of experimentation, innovation, risk management and continuous improvement.
Reduce carbon and natural capital within designs and embrace new digital technologies.
A little bit about your skills, experience and behaviours You will ideally hold a degree in an engineering discipline and be Chartered or working towards Chartered status, with proven experience in the water sector, preferably on potable water non‑infrastructure treatment projects. You are familiar with UK Water Industry regulations, have strong people management skills, and communicate adaptively and collaboratively. You are committed to a Right‑First‑Time approach and focus on delivery within time constraints.
