Essential Functions:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the surgical services department, aligning it with the overall organizational goals and objectives.
- Lead and manage a team of surgeons, nurses, and other surgical staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Represent the surgical services department at senior leadership meetings and external engagements, advocating for resources and promoting the department's achievements.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the surgical services department, ensuring efficient patient flow, optimal resource utilization, and adherence to established protocols.
- Implement and monitor quality improvement initiatives, utilizing data-driven approaches to identify and address areas for improvement in surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of surgical services within the broader healthcare system.
- Champion patient safety initiatives, promoting a culture of safety awareness and proactive risk management throughout the surgical services department.
- Implement and maintain comprehensive protocols for infection control, medication safety, and surgical equipment management.
- Conduct regular audits and reviews to identify and address potential safety risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain clinical expertise in surgical procedures and practices, staying abreast of advancements in surgical techniques and technologies.
- Facilitate the adoption of new surgical technologies and evidence-based practices within the department.
- Collaborate with surgeons to develop and implement clinical protocols and guidelines that optimize patient care and surgical outcomes.
- Provides coaching, mentoring and support to managers, colleagues, and staff; serves as a role model in professional behavior and leadership skills.
- Implements and monitors the overall goals of the surgery department, such as patient safety, quality of care, operational efficiency, and financial performance.
- Uses clear, concise, professional communication with coworkers, patients, all customers internal and external.
- Uses AIDET in interactions with patients and family members. Utilizes white boards for patient communication.
- Collaborates across disciplines to assist in coordination of patient care, including but not limited to patient transfer, discharge, referrals, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
- Acts with a sense of urgency when performing tasks.
- Basic unit/department maintenance such as keeping files, drawers, cabinets free from unnecessary clutter.
- Reports on any equipment and or environmental issues for repair.
- Abides by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations.
- Utilizes SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) when communicating with oncoming shift, physician communication and giving report to ancillary or other nursing services.
- Speaks up to stop the line and escalates potential safety events if necessary.
- Completes and attends monthly training assigned.
- May float to other areas of the hospital as needed.

Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum of ten (10)+ years of progressive experience in surgical services management, preferably in a leadership role.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic plans, optimizing operational efficiency, and enhancing patient safety and quality measures.
- Exceptional leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, inspire, and empower a diverse team of surgical professionals.
- Experience in a multi-specialty hospital or healthcare system a plus.
- Familiarity with surgical information systems and electronic health records (EHRs).
- Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, strong organizational skills, ability to follow verbal instructions, and PC (computer) skills.
- A capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, place patients and families first, and collaborate with the team members who are recognized leaders within healthcare.
