Description of Work

The Environmental Services Department Housekeeping position supports the mission of the North Carolina School for the Deaf by ensuring a safe, comfortable, clean and sanitary environment for the students, staff and visitors. This position performs housekeeping duties on a daily basis. Work to include complete cleaning, sanitation and minor maintenance of an assigned area. Position performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the care and cleaning of dormitories, offices, classrooms, restrooms, recreational facilities and other campus buildings. The security of the buildings, utility/emergency and corrective maintenance surveys, moving of furniture and other duties as assigned. Must be able to work independently with verbal instructions from the supervisor or as a team member on assignments. Duties include dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning of kitchen areas and other general tasks as assigned. Assist in facility clean up in emergency situations in accordance with M&O procedures.

The Housekeeper position is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors at the NC School for the Deaf, contributing to a safe, healthy living and learning atmosphere. As a Housekeeper, you will play a critical role in creating a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our students, staff, and visitors. You will be responsible for cleaning:

  • classrooms
  • dorm rooms
  • restrooms
  • clinical areas
  • offices
  • public spaces

Work must be done in accordance with established infection prevention protocols and cleaning standards. Much of the work is performed independently, but you will also be part of a team and must be willing to be a team player. We expect that you will be pleasant, courteous, and thoughtful around students, staff, and visitors. You will complete new employee orientation and attend training classes including American Sign Language (ASL) class.

Pay Range: $26, $46,991.00

Recruitment Range: $31, $37,200

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences:

  • Documented experience in the application of cleaning and sanitizing procedures, cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to communicate information in the English language in a concise and descriptive manner, verbally, written, or by demonstration.

Description of Work:

  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors; replenish supplies such as soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and buff floors in classrooms, dormitories, offices, hallways, and common areas.
  • Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, and surfaces, including desks, shelves, windowsills, and blinds.
  • Empty trash receptacles and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
  • Clean windows and glass surfaces as needed.
  • Report any maintenance issues, damages, or safety hazards to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follow established safety procedures and protocols when handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down for school events as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisor when reordering is necessary.
  • Adhere to all school policies and procedures.
Salary up to $37,200 (depending on education and experience)

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two), with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894, the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education.

North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates per the academic calendar, from August to May, with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons. In general, support services and administration operate year-round.

T his position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Supplemental Information:

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
