Position Summary
Volunteers of America Michigan is seeking an experienced, mission-driven District Manager to lead multiple thrift store locations. This role ensures exceptional fiscal performance, operational excellence, team leadership, and community engagement across the district.
The District Manager drives sales growth, enhances donor and customer experiences, develops store leadership talent, and builds community partnerships that support both revenue and mission outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Provide coaching and oversight to Store Managers.
- Monitor daily store operations and ensure compliance with policies, safety standards, and HR requirements.
- Conduct regular store visits to evaluate performance and implement improvements.
- Ensure best practices in merchandising, production, customer service, and donation processing.
- Strengthen community partnerships to grow both revenue and mission impact.
Fiscal & Performance Management
- Manage district financial performance including sales, labor, production, expenses, and margins.
- Analyze KPIs and develop action plans to meet or exceed financial targets.
- Recommend cost-saving improvements.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.
- Partner with finance and marketing to optimize pricing, inventory, and promotions.
Team Development & Leadership
- Recruit, train, and develop Store Managers and key retail staff.
- Build a collaborative, mission-driven team culture.
- Conduct performance evaluations, set goals, and provide consistent coaching.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
- Identify operational challenges and implement data-informed solutions.
- Serve as primary problem-solver for district-level staffing, donor, and facility issues.
- Improve workflow efficiency, donation processing, and sales conversion.
- Promote innovation and proactive problem-solving.
- Maintain safe working environments and ensure regulatory compliance.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Associate's degree required; bachelor's preferred.
- At least 3 years of retail or secondary retail management experience.
- Demonstrated success in sales, budgeting, and team leadership.
- Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency with retail systems, POS reporting, and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of retail operations, inventory, cash handling, and security protocols.
- Hiring, training, supervision, and motivational experience.
- Strong organization, prioritization, and customer service skills.
- Creative problem-solving with adaptability and versatility.
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
- Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
Essential Requirements
Physical Requirements
