Title

HIM Specialist

The HIM Specialist assures complete and accurate maintenance of key patient data in Bronson's information systems. The HIM Specialist will exercise a high degree of responsibility, problem-solving ability, analytical skills, initiative, and good judgment in resolving duplicate documents in both the EMR and paper record.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 1-2 years of health records experience in a hospital/medical office or similar setting with clerical duties preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to use a standard desktop and windows based computer system including a basic understanding of email, internet, and computer navigation; ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job
  • Excellent organization skills and can perform several duties and functions related to the daily operations of health record completion
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills
  • Must be able to perform detailed tasks and handle frequent interruptions as well as have the ability to change and be flexible with work priorities
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals and groups representing diverse perspectives
  • Understands when escalation of issues is necessary
  • Ability to train and educate coworkers
  • Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality

Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually. Conditions exist more than 90% of the work time.
Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.

  • Ability to analyze clinical & demographic information to accurately identify and resolve edits, duplicate documents.
  • Researches and resolves complex issues of patient identification.
  • Scanning of any loose documents that come from the medical practices to ensure that the record is complete.
  • Ensures that quality of scanned images and turnaround times are meeting established standards at all times.
  • Assists in development and implementation of improved workflow processes. Suggests ways to continually improve quality, productivity, expenses, and work processes
  • Analyzes demographic and clinical information to ensure accuracy. Utilizes effective and appropriate communication skills to communicate issues or questions with practice contacts.
  • Responsible to be knowledgeable of health maintenance criteria, create orders and attach results or correspondence to appropriate order to satisfy health maintenance. (For example: Diabetic eye exam, Diabetic foot exam, Colonoscopy for a patient that went for follow up so an order is not in EMR)
  • Ability to properly name and index documents to maintain organizational consistency.
  • Working knowledge of differences of scanning directly into EMR vs. usage of OnBase to import documents.
  • Ability to identify critical documents and prioritize to ensure documents are entered into the medical record appropriately. (i.e. prenatal ultrasounds, EKG's or other dialogistic tests)
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and functions related to release of patient health information preferred.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements for medical records.
  • Responds quickly and positively to customers while exhibiting a professional manner.
  • Receives and validates authorizations for release of information according to current legal and hospital requirements. Verifies authorizations for release of PHI are compliant with federal/state laws.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Leadership.
