Club Overview
Opening for play in 1918, Lochmoor Club is a private 18-hole championship golf course in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. The property includes a driving range, short-game practice area, and putting green, supporting a very active golf membership and full seasonal calendar.

Position Summary

The Equipment Manager is a key member of the agronomy team and is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and readiness of all golf course equipment and related tools. This position works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents to ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and produces the highest-quality cut and playing conditions for members and guests.

The Equipment Manager reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and gasoline/diesel-powered equipment.
  • Maintain and service reel and rotary mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, topdressers, blowers, trenchers, and other turf equipment.
  • Perform and track preventative maintenance to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Set up, adjust, and maintain cutting units to achieve consistent cut quality and proper height of cut across all mowers.
  • Perform grinding, backlapping, and reel/bedknife setup (training available if necessary).

2. Fleet Management, Inventory & Procurement

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment repairs, service intervals, and parts usage.
  • Manage inventory of frequently used parts, shop supplies, and lubricants.
  • Source and order parts and materials within an approved budget.
  • Assist the Superintendent in assessing long-term equipment needs and capital planning.

3. Shop Management & Safety

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient maintenance facility and work areas.
  • Ensure all work practices comply with OSHA and club safety standards.
  • Maintain and test safety devices on equipment (ROPS, seat belts, interlocks, guards, etc.).
  • Oversee proper storage, handling, and documentation of fuels, oils, and chemicals related to equipment.
  • Conduct routine checks on regularly used equipment to ensure readiness for daily operations; perform on-course emergency repairs as needed.

4. Training, Communication & Support

  • In coordination with the Superintendent and assistants, train maintenance staff on safe and proper equipment operation, daily checks, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Provide clear daily communication to the Superintendent team regarding equipment status, breakdowns, and turnaround timelines.
  • Support morning maintenance by staging equipment, fueling, and ensuring units are set up correctly for the day's tasks.
  • Periodically observe mowers and equipment on the course to verify performance and after-cut appearance.

5. Additional Duties

  • Operate equipment as needed during peak season, major projects, and tournaments.
  • Perform basic welding, fabrication, and minor facility maintenance as required.
  • Assist with winterization, offseason rebuilding, and spring startup of the equipment fleet.

Qualifications

Required

  • Proven mechanical experience with small engines, hydraulics, and gasoline/diesel systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on a variety of equipment.
  • Basic welding and fabrication skills (or willingness to learn).
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and parts diagrams.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly related to the quality of cut and safety.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and able to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Positive, team-oriented attitude and professional communication skills.

Preferred

  • Prior experience as a golf course equipment technician or equipment manager.
  • Experience with reel grinding and cutting unit setup.
  • Vocational/technical degree or related certifications (turf equipment, automotive, diesel, etc.).
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance records or fleet management systems.

Work Schedule & Physical Requirements

  • Full-time, year-round position.
  • Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, with earlier start times in the growing season and occasional weekend/holiday work for tournaments or special events.
  • Ability to lift 50–75 lbs. occasionally and perform physically demanding tasks, including standing, bending, kneeling, and working in outdoor and noisy conditions.
