Overnight Camp Lex Coordinator 


Scope: Facilitating and maintaining a military inspired educational and character building program geared towards nonprofit youth organizations aboard a historical aircraft carrier.

Responsibilities: 

  • Assisting Senior Overnight Camp LEX Coordinator in the preparation and facilitation of the educational overnight program Camp LEX Overnight Adventure Program.
  • Clean and maintain Camp LEX spaces i.e., office, berthing compartments (sleeping quarters), lounge, and game room.
  • Attend and participate in any/all crew meetings required for the department.
  • Report and document any maintenance concerns promptly.
  • Coordinate with USS Lexington crew (staff, volunteers, vendors) keeping detailed updates and communication throughout program.
  • Facilitate and actively supervise the Camp LEX Overnight Adventure Program in its entirety.
  • Provide program and safety information to as many as 400 guests in an informative and engaging manner.
  • Make announcements on the 1MC (museum's intercom system) throughout the program.
  • Ensure groups follow all safety rules and policies.
  • Sleep onboard in designated coordinator compartment
  • Assist in morning Camp LEX program duties.
  • Inspect and clear out any used compartments promptly after groups dismissal.
  • Submit program documents to various departments communicating final details, spaces used, maintenance reports, etc. 
  • Perform any and all related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge Required: High School Diploma. Genuine interest in the education of children and young adults.  Positive, professional attitude toward work and programs offered.  Ability to relate to and interact with children and adults in a positive and professional manner.  An outgoing personality comfortable communicating with large numbers of guests at a time. Ability to multi-task is essential. Ability to assist Senior Camp LEX Overnight Coordinator and be part of a team.  Must become familiar and comfortable with the ship, tour routes, history, safety procedures, etc. Office hours vary based on program schedule. Must be comfortable communicating effectively and professionally through email, phone, and hand held radio. Must have basic computer skills and experience with software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Knowledge Preferred: Experience working with children and young adults in a similar educational setting.  Experience or knowledge of history, World War II, United States Navy, or related topic areas.  Experience as a paraprofessional, teacher, or former Military.

License/Certification Requirements: Valid Texas driver's license and an insurable driving record. Youth Protection Certification within 90 days of employment.

Physical Demands:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical stamina to keep up with the demands of working with large groups of youth and adults while touring the ship. Must present a neat, clean and "shipshape" appearance being that USS Lexington is a United States Navy Ship, and a museum with a military theme. Must be comfortable with sleeping overnight in a designated coordinator compartment on scheduled program dates. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and walk for long periods of time.  Must be able to work with large groups and to withstand loud sounds for extended periods of time.  Must be able to speak loudly and comfortable with public speaking.  The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to climb ladders and/or balance. The employee is required to lift up to 20 pounds. The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
