JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Bus Assistant
Status: Part-time, Permanent, Non-Exempt
Department: Children's Services
Reports to: Transportation and Facilities Manager

Designation: Non-Safety Sensitive

Job Summary
The Bus Aid supervises the preschool children on the bus to ensure their safety while being transported to and from school. The employee works a split shift providing transportation for children in the morning and afternoon. It is essential that they demonstrate professionalism, a respect for confidentiality and a commitment to the agency's mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the children on and off of the bus.
  2. Place children in secure and appropriate child safety seats.
  3. Place children's back packs/belongings in a secure position on the bus.
  4. Manage children's behavior using appropriate techniques and monitor safety and wellbeing.
  5. Ensure that adult:child ratios maintained as required by DHS.

  6. Accurately and effectively communicate detailed information to varied groups and individuals.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
7. Assist with first aid administration subject to the direction of the bus driver.
8. In coordination with the bus driver, maintain a clean vehicle, sweeping, trash pick up and washing as needed.

  1. Participate in required training.
  2. In coordination with the bus driver, perform Child Safety Check System at the completion of each trip.

  3. Other duties as assigned that support the agency's mission.

Qualifications

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

  3. Essential physical and mental requirements to perform the duties of this position include: Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and concentrate for long periods of time to ensure the safety of the passengers. Regularly required to talk and hear. Regularly required to document information using a computer program and/or make handwritten notes. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, and move freely within the bus. The employee must often lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

  4. Background clearance from the Child and Adult Abuse and Maltreatment Central Registry and Arkansas State Police criminal background check.

  5. Meet agency's drug screening requirements.

  1. Ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while performing bus duties.

  2. Ability to remain calm in an emergency situation.

  3. Ability to develop positive rapport with children.

  4. Dependable.

Days/Hours: Monday – Friday, split shift a.m. and p.m. hours. This position is based on the annual in-center staff calendar. Additional hours/days may be required to meet the needs of the agency.
