Lead Maintenance Mechanic (Supervisor)

The Town of Rye is accepting applications for a full-time Lead Maintenance Mechanic (Supervisor). Nestled in the hills of Southeastern Westchester and along the Long Island Sound, the Town of Rye includes the Villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook and the Rye Neck section of the Village of Mamaroneck. The Town serves approximately 50,000 residents, spans three school districts, and operates two major parks, Crawford Park and Rye Town Park.

Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Director of Grounds and Facilities, the Lead Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising maintenance activities within Town parks and facilities. This position provides hands-on leadership to maintenance staff and performs skilled work in groundskeeping, landscaping, facility repairs, and installation projects. Additional related duties may be assigned as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and oversee daily work assignments for maintenance staff.
  • Provide clear, practical instructions to semi-skilled and unskilled personnel.
  • Perform and supervise work in landscaping, gardening, irrigation, drainage, and ground maintenance.
  • Conduct maintenance, repair, and installation of park facilities, equipment, and structures.
  • Maintain athletic fields, including soccer fields and baseball diamonds.
  • Perform minor road and sidewalk repair within park properties.
  • Assist with snow removal operations.
  • Maintain accurate time records, work progress reports, and equipment logs.
  • Operate a full range of maintenance equipment, including:

  • Loader/backhoe

  • Riding and push mowers
  • Dump trucks
  • Pickup trucks

  • Carry out general building maintenance tasks as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Attributes

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment, tools, and methods.
  • Knowledge of tree and shrub planting, care, and cultivation.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, pesticides, and proper application techniques.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain simple records and complete required documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, email, and database software.
  • Initiative, sound judgment, and reliability.
  • Physical ability to perform all duties associated with this position.

Minimum Training & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following:

  • (a) Four years of experience in landscaping, facility maintenance, gardening, or groundskeeping; or
  • (b) Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school program.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License (required).

  • A Certified Pesticide Applicator's License is preferred but not required.
