By joining our Hopkinsville Section in our Caldwell County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Hancock County, you'll have the opportunity to perform a variety of essential tasks to maintain the safety and functionality of our roadways. The successful candidate can take advantage of classroom and in-field trainings to allow for continued education to become specialized in road and construction maintenance operations.
Summary Of Responsibilities
- Equipment operations; operate single axle dump truck to haul materials, snowplows, salt spreaders and mowing machines efficiently and safely.
- Roadway repairs: shovel blacktop and perform other roadway maintenance- related activities as required.
- Brush cutting and tree maintenance; perform brush cutting operations using chain saws, bush axes, or chemical treatments to ensure clear visibility and safety on roadways.
- Traffic control: flag traffic for maintenance crews during operations to guarantee the safety of team members and the public
- Snow removal; effectively operate snowplows and salt spreaders to clear roadways during winter weather conditions
- Work in all types of weather and as a team, and work emergency call outs as needed
Ideal Candidate Will Have Experience In
- Experience in equipment operations: proven experience operating single axle dump trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, moving machines, chain saws, bush axes
- Minor repairs and maintenance
- Physical fitness – ability to perform physically demanding tasks which includes shoveling and operating equipment while working on rough terrain and in changing climates

Additional position information (travel required, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.)
Be able to lift and carry 50 lbs, work on rough terrain, be able to twist, bend, stoop, stand. Must be able to work extended hours and in all weather elements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):
Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license.
Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
