What a DSP does under Ohio DODD

• A DSP supports individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to live more independently.
• Duties often include assisting with daily living (eating, bathing, dressing), housekeeping, transportation, community integration, teaching life skills, medication support, etc.
• DSPs must follow Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and adhere to standards and rules under Ohio law and DODD regulations.

Requirements / Qualifications

• Minimum Age - 18 years or older
• Education - High School Diploma or GED
• Valid ID/SSN - Must have a valid social security number and a government-issued driving license and up to date vehicle insurance
• Driving record - Clean driving, must not exceed 6 points
• Background check - Must pass a criminal background check; certain offenses may may disqualify a candidate
• Physical ability - Ability to lift a certain weight lbs.) and perform physical tasks
• Training/certification - Must complete DODD training (initial and annual)

Training & Certification

• Ohio requires Initial Training and Annual Training for DSPs, whether agency-employed or independent.
• Training topics include: rights of individuals, safety/emergency procedures, infection control, emergency protocols, person-centered planning, implementation of ISPs, documentation, etc.
• Additional mandatory trainings: CPR / First Aid / AED certifications, medication administration, etc.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: From $14.50 per hour

Expected hours: 20.0 – 40.0 per week
