Job Overview
The Hotel Engineer supports the smooth and safe operation of the hotel's physical plant and property – from guest rooms to common areas, back-of-house, and building infrastructure. This role ensures that all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general maintenance systems operate reliably to deliver high-quality guest experience, protect hotel assets, and maintain safety and compliance with local regulations. We are looking for someone who can work 8-16 hours every week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine inspections on building systems and hotel equipment (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, water heaters / boilers, chillers, ventilation, fire safety systems, pool/spa systems, etc.).
  • Respond promptly to guest and staff maintenance requests – guest room repairs, appliance fixes (e.g. TVs, lighting, plumbing), common area/building maintenance, emergency repairs as needed.
  • Maintain and repair furnishings, fixtures and finishes (carpets, tiles, windows, mirrors, furniture, doors, walls, painting, etc.) in guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house.
  • Maintain hotel support equipment – kitchen, laundry, housekeeping, back-of-house equipment, pool/spa systems, exterior property and grounds as needed.
  • Conduct safety checks and compliance inspections – fire safety, elevators (or coordinating with certified contractors), life-safety systems, water treatment, pool/spa chemical management (if applicable), and building code compliance.
  • Maintain and organize parts, tools, and maintenance inventory; document work and keep maintenance logs, track repairs, supply usage, and identify needed replacements or major repairs.
  • Perform property rounds / inspections (guest rooms, public spaces, exterior grounds, mechanical/equipment rooms) to proactively detect issues before they affect operations or guest experience.
  • Respond to emergency situations (e.g. power failures, water leaks, fire alarms, equipment breakdowns, elevator issues) – coordinate as needed, ensure guest/staff safety, and perform necessary repairs or escalate appropriately.
  • Support the hotel's preventive maintenance program schedule (room-PM, system-PM, building-PM), ensure timely completion of preventive tasks and minimize reactive maintenance.

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma / GED required; technical training, trade school, or certifications (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of maintenance or engineering experience; hotel/hospitality experience preferred (especially for working with guest-facing properties).
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in at least some of these trades: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting / finishes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical schematics, equipment manuals and follow safety/regulatory standards.
  • Physical ability and stamina: ability to climb ladders, lift heavy items (often 50–100 lbs), climb stairs, bend, kneel, stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Good communication skills – able to interact courteously with guests, staff, and management; able to coordinate with contractors and other departments.
  • Flexibility with work hours – willingness to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and respond to after-hours emergencies.

Reporting & Team Structure

  • Reports to the Chief Engineer / Director of Engineering or equivalent.
  • Works collaboratively with other maintenance technicians / engineering staff, housekeeping, guest services, and hotel management to maintain hotel standards and respond to guest needs.

Personal Attributes / Desired Traits

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills – able to diagnose issues methodically and implement effective, durable repairs.
  • Proactive and detail-oriented: anticipates maintenance needs, logs and tracks conditions before they become guest complaints or safety issues.
  • Professional demeanor, able to work under pressure and respond to emergencies calmly.
  • Integrity and reliability – maintain confidentiality of hotel information, respect security protocols, master-key control, safety standards, and proper documentation.
