About the Job
This position is the full-operating level Plumbing technician responsible for maintaining, repairing and updating our department facilities mechanical plumbing systems and fixtures to ensure operational readiness of the facilities and site conditions which facilitate the mission requirements of the building's occupants. The Facilities Maintenance Branch work unit provides for a safe, high-quality physical work environment by maintaining buildings and grounds in compliance with acceptable professional standards.
Work Environment This is a one-person plumbing operation on the maintenance team; plan your day and own the work
New work truck and tools are provided, including a new jet rodder for drain cleaning.
Consistent schedule of four ten-hour days, Tuesday-Friday.
Position is not on-call and is not responsible for snow removal.
Primary work location is 15203 W 12th Ave, Golden, CO.
Position requires state-wide travel to over 50 CDPS facilities as needed for maintenance and repairs.

Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Plumbing Systems and Fixtures Repairs
This position is the full-operating level capable Plumbing technician responsible for maintaining, repairing and updating our department facilities mechanical plumbing systems and fixtures to ensure operational readiness of the facilities and site conditions which facilitate the mission requirements of the building's occupants. Specific duties include:
- Performs preventative maintenance and repair work on all plumbing systems and fixtures in accordance to department standards and current code requirements.
- Installs or alters new or upgraded plumbing systems and fixtures for the purpose of construction, tenant finishing or remodeling according to diagram specifications and code requirements.
- Responds to plumbing service or trouble calls, troubleshoots and provides problem resolution.
- Inspects, maintains and repairs various types of fire protection systems.
- Maintains, tests and installs devices for the prevention of backflow, back siphonage or cross connection. Prepares working sketches and works from blueprints, written, or verbal instructions.
- Maintains records and prepares daily activity reports, documents actions taken in the organizations maintenance management system.
- Estimates materials, labor and equipment costs for their projects.
- Serves as the Construction Liaison for large scale CDPS plumbing requirements associated with CDPS Capital Construction or Controlled Maintenance projects.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair work in a variety of skilled trades areas and reports failures and code compliance and deficiencies to their supervisor
- May prepare requisitions for order parts and supplies as needed
- Diagnoses malfunctions of mechanical systems and controls and restore to specified operating standards.
- Learns and understands state and local laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to plumbing fixtures and associated equipment.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
- Follows safe work practices to ensure the safety of themselves and other staff.
- Safely work with the hand tools and testing equipment that are characteristic to the trade.
- Works and communicates effectively with contractors, department staff and others in order to perform the duties required of the position.
- Maintains record of inspections and work performed.
- May be required to assist in facility emergencies after hours (but compensated for time).
- Maintains proficiency in the International Plumbing Code (IPC), the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), and the Rules and Regulations as adopted by the Examining Board of Plumbers, and the building codes adopted by reference with the State of Colorado by the Office of the State Architect.
- Maintains professional proficiency in the area of cross-connections, calculations, and blueprint reading, combination waste and vent systems, hangers, supports, and system protection, indirect and special waste piping, installation techniques, plumbing fixtures, sanitary drainage systems, storm drainage systems, traps, interceptors, separators, vents/venting, water distribution systems.
Inspections and Facility Audits
Inspects building plumbing fixtures, systems and associated facility equipment to determine requirements for the maintenance and repair needs and costs of proposed projects, upgrades for existing systems. Provides the plumbing reviews in the performance of facility audits for State Buildings Controlled Maintenance Program assisting the Capital Development and Planning Branch of the Property Services Section. Functions as a S.M.E. for the Unit, reading blueprints and plans, suggesting courses of work in this field.
Advising/Consulting/Other Duties as Assigned
Consults with department programs and staff on plumbing system requirements and needs for construction, renovations or other programmatic changes. Advises on plumbing system and fixture applications during project development and supports the low-dollar construction or controlled maintenance projects advising the Capital Development and Planning Branch when necessary on low-dollar threshold projects. Assists, as required, with special projects for other CDPS agencies small-construction projects. May participate in campus snow removal duties if assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications
- Current journeyman plumber license issued by the State of Colorado. You must submit a copy of your license with your application for full consideration.
- Three years of experience performing plumbing and steam piping related tasks which included preventative maintenance, repair and installation of plumbing and steam systems.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies
- One year service plumbing experience
- One year of drain cleaning experience
- Experience using Microsoft Windows, Excel and Word is necessary for performing administrative functions of the job.
- Must possess excellent customer service skills to include communicating with and responding to all levels of employees in a professional environment.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam, a fingerprint based criminal history search, reference checking.
- A current Colorado Driver License is required and must be maintained during employment.
- Must be Colorado resident at the time of application.
- Must be physically able to perform strenuous physical labor including lifting up to 50 pounds.
