The School District of Whitefish Bay is looking for a full-time Paraprofessional II (Cross-Categorical/Special Education Paraprofessional). This position is currently assigned to work at Whitefish Bay High School. A full-time Paraprofessional II position is assigned to work 7.00 hours/day (plus a 30 minute unpaid lunch period) and is eligible for benefits offered by the District.
We are seeking team members who are able to support the independence and inclusion of all children, especially those with disabilities. Qualified candidates should be able to articulate a basic understanding of disability categories and their implications for a child's education. Our team members understand the purpose of supports and services and those that are typically associated with each disability category. Our paraprofessionals can empathize with families on the impact that exceptionalities can have on parents and students alike.
This position will support students in general and special education environments by:
- Providing the least intrusive level of support appropriate to academic and social-emotional needs;
- Using knowledge of a student's strengths and interests to encourage engagement in school learning and activities;
- Demonstrating proficiency in academics appropriate to the assignment;
- Using positive behavioral supports to maintain a student's dignity;
- Demonstrating an understanding of the communicative intents of behaviors; and
- Assisting with some personal cares that may be required
Primary responsibilities for this position include:
1 - Relate to the High School Philosophy/Mission Statement and the high school learner.
2 - Maintain ethical behavior and standards including confidentiality.
3 - Provide specialized instruction under the direction of a special education teacher.
4 - Assist individual or small groups of students to reinforce information taught by the regular and/or special education teacher.
5 - Use curriculum modifications to meet individual student needs as stated in the IEP under the direction of the special education teacher.
6 - Provide instructional support in the regular and the special education classroom.
7 - Use a variety of tools to facilitate communication between paras, teachers, and parents, as assigned, through journals, daily behavior
charts/logs, and verbal communication.
8 - Other duties as assigned.
Paraprofessionals are provided with professional growth opportunities including Non-violent Crisis Prevention Intervention certification (CPI), relevant student medical needs, and other training specific to individual student needs.
The work schedule for this position largely corresponds to the student calendar and have be assigned additional days for professional learning throughout the year. Full-time Paraprofessionals work 7.00 hours per day (plus a 30 minute unpaid lunch period), starting and ending approximately with the student day.
The successful candidate will maintain established routines and procedures while practicing with competence, integrity, and sound judgment even in the absence of close supervision. Due to the sensitive nature of the job duties being performed, a high degree of confidentiality is required.
The successful candidate will have DPI certification as a Special Education Program Aide or have required qualifications to attain certification and be responsible for costs. Please view the Qualifications Section for information about the DPI Special Education license process.
