Job Description

General Description:
NOVA Workforce Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote and online. The teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

Duties and Tasks:

  • Provide hands-on, guided, differentiated instructions to students enrolled in the courses, as specified in the schedule and course contract.
  • Prepare course materials and lesson plans.
  • Conduct efficient and effective classroom management.
  • Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the institution, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
  • Use the institution's learning management system to post syllabus, assignments, and other materials and to communicate with students, in a timely manner.
  • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Maintain records of enrollment and attendance, assessments and grades, and submit class rosters and grade sheets by the deadlines established by the department.
  • Maintains a hazard free environment and practices safety in lab(s) or classroom.
  • Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

KSAs:

  • Communication – Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills for classroom instruction and team collaboration.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Systems – Thorough understanding of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems used in industrial, commercial, and facility maintenance.
  • Industrial Safety Standards – Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, and hazard communication regulations.
  • Workforce Development Principles – Knowledge of adult learning theories, technical education practices, and competency-based instruction models.
  • Instructional Delivery – Ability to teach hands-on technical content clearly and effectively to diverse learners.
  • Troubleshooting and Diagnostics – Strong problem-solving skills for identifying and correcting mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Curriculum Integration – Skill in aligning instructional content with industry standards and certification requirements.
  • Apply Industry Experience to Teaching – Ability to draw upon real-world maintenance scenarios to enhance classroom learning.
  • Represent NOVA Professionally – Ability to uphold institutional standards and positively represent NOVA Workforce in all instructional and industry settings.
  • Be familiar with subject area certification processes, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications and the ability to use computers for providing class presentation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Prior teaching or training experience in the subject field/industry or must demonstrate evidence of teaching potential.
  • Practical working experience in the subject field/industry and related industries.
  • Combination of education and industry credentials to demonstrate content expertise applicable to the course being taught.

Instruction and Training:

  • Develop and deliver engaging, hands-on training programs for students in maintenance and repair skills.

  • Instruct students on the use of tools, equipment, and techniques used in maintenance work.

  • Provide practical experience through hands-on projects and simulations.

  • Assess student learning and provide constructive feedback.

Curriculum Development:

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and update curriculum materials.

Facility Maintenance:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on buildings and equipment.

  • Identify and address maintenance issues promptly.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with safety regulations and procedures.

  • Provide instruction on safety procedures to students.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs.
