We are seeking an Electrograph Technician I/II Under general supervision, the Electrograph Technician I/II primarily operate and maintain electrocardiographs (EKG), prepare patients and assist cardiologists during cardiac imaging studies; receive training to assist with operating and maintaining electroencephalograph (EEG), electromyographic (EMG) and related equipment for the purpose of preparing and attending to patients undergoing nerve conduction studies and neurological testing.
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A certificate of completion of an electrocardiography course issued by an accredited college or vocational school.
  • Prior experience in a hospital, clinic, or diagnostic lab setting preferred, especially performing EKGs and assisting in cardiac testing.
  • Experience in using Electronic Health Records System, such as EPIC.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a compassionate approach to patient care, including the ability to explain procedures clearly and ease patient anxiety.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, and technicians in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Electrograph Technician I ($30.47- $38.10 Hourly) is the entry level class of the electrograph series. Under supervision incumbents are expected to be able to perform electrocardiograph (EKG) procedures within established guidelines. This class is flexibly staffed with Electrograph Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after receiving appropriate training and demonstrating proficiency for the higher level class.
Electrograph Technician II ($35.14- $43.93 Hourly) is the journey level class of this series. Incumbents are responsible for the independent and unsupervised operation and maintenance of electrocardiograph (EKG) equipment for standard and advanced cardiology testing, with the capacity and capability to learn and assist with the operation and maintenance of electroencephalograph (EEG) and electromyographic (EMG) equipment for neurological testing.
NOTE: The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, term, unclassified, and regular classified vacancies.
Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Electrograph Technician Tech I:
  • Under supervision, assist with operating electrocardiograph, Holter Monitor recording and scan, stress test equipment, and other related equipment.
  • Record and operate appropriate equipment during cardioversions and cardiac stress tests.
  • Assist with making adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.
  • Set up machines and scan recordings.
  • Room patients; assist and prepare for studies.
  • Keep electrocardiograph machines throughout the facility clean and stocked with necessary supplies
  • Check electrocardiograph machines throughout facility as assigned.
  • Perform clerical duties such as schedule appointments and answer phone calls.
  • Maintain current and historical reports.
  • Process patient treatment charges to business office.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Electrograph Technician Tech II:
  • Independently operate electrocardiograph, Holter Monitor recording and scan, stress test equipment, and other related equipment for standard and advanced cardiology testing.
  • Record and operate appropriate equipment during cardioversions and cardiac stress tests.
  • Make adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.
  • Set up cardiac monitoring equipment, observe patient recordings, note irregularities and correct interferences; review and edit each tracing; and send to physicians.
  • Room patients; assist and prepare for studies.
  • Keep electrocardiograph machines throughout the facility clean and stocked with necessary supplies
  • Receive appropriate training to help assist with operating electroencephalograph and related equipment to make tracings.
  • Assist with applying recording electrodes and remain with patient during recording period.
  • Observe patients under study and reports difficulties.
  • Assist medical staff in preparation and monitoring of patients receiving conscious sedation.
  • Record any abnormal patient movements.
  • Organize and prepare appropriate instruments, medication and other equipment necessary to carry out special procedures, such as nasopharyngeal recording.
  • Assist with moving and positioning electroencephalograph in the operating room to permit the taking of a tracing simultaneously with surgery.
  • Sterilize equipment; operate electromyogram to record samples.
  • Perform clerical duties such as schedule appointments and answer phones.
  • Maintain current and historical reports.
  • Process patient treatment charges to business office.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Note: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles, methods and procedures of electrocardiograph, Holter Monitor placement, scanning and analyzing recordings, stress test equipment, and other related specialized equipment.
  • Current concepts and technology in electrocardiograph work.
  • Basic concepts and understanding of electroencephalograph and electromyogram equipment and work.
  • Recording techniques.
  • Maintenance of electrograph and related equipment.
  • Billing documentation requirements for treatment charges to be sent to business office.
  • Patient needs.
  • Recordkeeping practices.

Skill/Ability to:
  • Operate electrograph equipment.
  • Perform technical procedures involved with the taking of recordings.
  • Check recordings for diagnostic accuracy.
  • Recognize abnormal recordings and make corrections.
  • Learn new procedures, techniques, and equipment including for neurological testing/studies.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Calibrate equipment.
  • Work with patients safely, sympathetically and with their cooperation.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
  • Electrograph Technician I: Knowledge and training on electrocardiograph (EKG) equipment and procedures. Experience operating and maintaining EKG equipment preferred. A certificate of completion of an electrocardiography course issued by an accredited college or vocational school.
  • Electrograph Technician II: One (1) year full time experience operating and maintaining electrocardiograph (EKG) equipment. A certificate of completion of an electrocardiography course issued by an accredited college or vocational school.

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply . Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.
The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
