The Director of Marketing & Communications is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and amplifying Spirit Rock's voice, ensuring our offerings, values, and mission reach and resonate with diverse communities locally and globally. This role leads the vision, strategy, and execution of all marketing and communications functions across print, digital, and experiential channels.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong execution skills-someone who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment and can toggle fluidly between high-level planning and hands-on implementation. You're comfortable navigating complexity, energized by storytelling, and committed to advancing equity and inclusion through all aspects of your work.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Integrated Strategy: Develop and implement a holistic marketing and communications strategy that reinforces Spirit Rock's brand identity, strengthens community connection, and supports cross-organizational goals, including program attendance, donor engagement, and mission visibility.
- Steward Brand & Voice: Maintain and evolve Spirit Rock's brand presence to reflect our values of compassion, equity, and spiritual depth. Ensure a unified tone and aesthetic across all platforms.
- Oversee Content and Channels: Direct and manage the creation, review, and distribution of content across various channels, including the website, email, social media, print, and multimedia, ensuring quality, accessibility, and alignment with our strategic goals.
- Drive Data-Informed Decision Making: Utilize audience insights and analytics to refine messaging and enhance engagement, with a particular focus on reaching new and historically underrepresented communities.
- Lead Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Programs and Development teams to support key initiatives and campaigns with integrated messaging and outreach plans.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
- Registration Operations: Ensure alignment between marketing goals and customer-facing operations in the registration department.
- Budget Oversight: Develop and manage the annual marketing and communications budget, ensuring responsible and strategic allocation of resources.
- Stay Ahead of Trends: Monitor and assess emerging tools, technologies, and practices in digital communications, marketing, and user experience. Bring innovation to Spirit Rock's strategy where appropriate.
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of progressive leadership experience in marketing, communications, or brand strategy roles, preferably within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization. A track record of results across key marketing metrics.
- Proven success managing and mentoring teams, including setting clear expectations, supporting growth, and leading with emotional intelligence. Demonstrated performance in leading cross-departmental teams with positive outcomes.
- Strong background in digital marketing, content strategy, and campaign development; experience with audience segmentation and performance tracking.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and compellingly.
- Familiarity with web design, UX, and layout principles; experience working with designers and content producers.
- Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, email automation tools, CRM systems).
- Deep understanding of and commitment to principles of equity, inclusion, and cultural humility in communication strategy.
- Knowledge of Insight Meditation, Buddhist values, or contemplative practices is strongly preferred.
