The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Bridge Design, has a full-time vacancy for a Civil Engineer I, II or III.
SUMMARY :
Civil Engineer I: To perform entry-level civil engineer duties during assignment as needed within the Bureau of Bridge Design.
Civil Engineer II: To perform engineering duties including investigations and calculations associated with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges and other highway structures for the Bureau of Bridge Design.
Civil Engineer III: To perform engineering calculations and develop studies and plans associated with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges and other highway structures for the Bureau of Bridge Design.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS : Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
CE I
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: No experience required.
OR
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or civil technology.
Experience: Two (2) years of post-graduate experience in engineering comparable to an Engineering Technician.
License/Certification:
Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification.
Valid driver's license and access to transportation for statewide travel
Other Requirements: Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation.
Trainee Option: Not applicable
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS : Knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering including a working knowledge of advanced high school mathematics. Knowledge of surveying, material testing and elementary design. Skill in the use of surveying, material testing and drafting instruments and calculators. Ability to make simple drawings, tracings and technical calculations. Ability to perform simple laboratory tests and assume inspection responsibilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, members of the public and other employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.

Criteria: For promotion from Civil Engineers-1 job title to Civil Engineers-2, job title the eligibility requirements in Per Broad Group Level Advancement must be satisfied.

Experience: No experience required.

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: Eighteen (18) months of post baccalaureate experience engineering.
OR
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study engineering or civil technology.
Experience: Eighteen (18) months of experience in engineering at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two (2) additional years' experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.
License/Certification:
Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification.
Valid driver's license and access to transportation for statewide travel

Ability to perform precise survey work, make moderately difficult technical computations and estimates, reduce field notes and draw complex preliminary and final plans and compile engineering data and statistics. Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications. Ability to organize the work of skilled and unskilled workers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, members of the public and other employees. Civil Engineer I:
Assists with evaluation of existing bridge conditions and checks calculations to determine structural capacity to provide data for determining maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement needs.
Reviews and checks preliminary bridge and roadway location, alignment, profile, drainage, hydraulic, survey and soil data to provide information for developing and evaluating design alternatives.
Checks and revises fabricator shop drawings and performs necessary engineering calculations for review of contractor falsework proposals to insure conformity with plans, design, and office specifications.
Drafts and checks contract plans for bridges, approaches and other highway related structures in compliance with drafting and engineering standards to produce detailed contract plans for review.
Checks structural design calculations for concrete, steel and timber bridges and other highway related structures in compliance with office standards, state specifications and national engineering codes in order to provide safe economical structures and highways.
Reviews and checks quantities for bridges, roadways and related structures to provide information for project cost estimates and for bidding and construction purposes.
Compiles information, performs basic design functions, and computes quantities.

Civil Engineer II:

Develops and checks contract plans applying engineering principles and practices in accordance with state specifications and national engineering codes to provide plans for review and advertisement.
Performs complex design calculations for concrete, steel and timber bridges and other highway related structures in compliance with office standards, state specifications and national engineering codes in order to provide safe economical structures and highways.
Initiates and integrates computer aided design (CAD/D) and personal computer techniques to expedite engineering duties.
Develops preliminary bridge and roadway studies coordinating extensive engineering information to provide design alternatives for review.
Advises less experienced design and technical personnel in order to assist in the proper development of projects and to promote an understanding of bureau policies, state specs and national engineering codes.
Communicates with departmental bureaus and other agencies in order to facilitate the production of contract plans and ensure completeness, accuracy and consistency of the contract plans.
Checks fabricators' shop drawings and performs necessary engineering calculations for review of contractor falsework proposals to ensure conformity with plans and design and office specifications.
Evaluates the condition of existing structures and performs calculations to determine structural capacity to provide data for determining maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement needs.
