POSITION OVERVIEW

The Engineering Manager will be a strategic leader and hands-on technical contributor responsible for guiding and developing our existing engineering team including mechanical, electrical and software engineers. This role will formalize engineering processes, drive cross-discipline collaboration and ensure engineering excellence across product development, support and innovation. The Engineering Manager will report directly to the CEO and play a key role in shaping the future of Elkins Earthworks' technical capabilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Management

  • Provide coaching, mentorship and performance management to mechanical, electrical and software engineers. Current staffing includes four full-time employees.
  • Establish clear technical expectations, team goals, engineering standards and career development plans.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, quality, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Lead regular engineering team meetings and cross-functional technical reviews.
  • Drive success by meeting project deadlines and ensure team accountability.

Engineering Program Development

  • Develop and implement formal engineering processes, including design controls, documentation procedures, code/review standards and project lifecycle practices.
  • Coordinate engineering resource planning, project prioritization, scheduling and deliverables.
  • Enhance collaboration between engineering disciplines to improve product integration and efficiency.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead technical strategy and support product development from concept through release.
  • Review, advise and contribute to mechanical, electrical and software design efforts.
  • Provide hands-on engineering support as time allows, especially in areas of expertise or during critical project phases.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet functional, performance, safety and compliance requirements.

Project Management & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with operations, product management, sales and customer support teams to align engineering efforts with business objectives and customer needs.
  • Identify technical risks and mitigation plans for product roadmaps.
  • Track engineering KPIs and regular status reporting to CEO and Owner/President.

Recruitment & Team Growth

  • Support recruiting, hiring and onboarding of additional engineering team members as needed.
  • Promote a diverse, inclusive and high-performance work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Software/Computer or related field).
  • Minimum 5+ years of engineering experience with at least 2+ years in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in product development lifecycle, engineering process implementation, documenting requirements/processes and cross-functional collaboration.

Preferred

  • Experience with embedded systems, instrumentation, IoT/field measurement technologies or analytical hardware/software products.
  • Experience with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001), regulatory compliance practices, calibration or testing protocols.
  • Prior experience in small to mid-size technical company or startup environment.
