Scope of Responsibilities

Speech-Language Pathologists are communication specialists who work with speech and language impairments.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
  • Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language impairments.
  • Provides screening to identify children with speech and language disabilities at regular intervals and at specified levels.
  • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.
  • Provides appropriate services to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggesting the student's daily activities.
  • Provides information and support to parents and families. Maintains Individual Educational Plans for all students assigned to caseloads, meeting timelines.
  • Provides progress reports on goals and objectives.
  • Maintains all student records, evaluations, and IEPs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned master's degree in speech and language pathology.
  • A valid Michigan certificate with speech and language impaired (SB) endorsement or a master's degree and the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Minimum three years of successful experience working with children and families in an urban educational setting and/or diverse/multi-cultural setting.
