PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Perform highway maintenance and repair functions including snow and ice removal, inspection of roads, operation of equipment and vehicles as directed, and basic facility and equipment maintenance and repair.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Safely perform highway maintenance and repairs using many different pieces of equipment. Typical highway maintenance and repairs include snow and ice removal, tree and brush removal, bituminous patching, crack sealing, mowing, culvert replacement, crushed rock road maintenance, excavation, and sign installations and repair.

Operate and perform routine maintenance on equipment such as tandem axle trucks, loaders, dozers, backhoes, mower tractors, motor graders, rollers and broom tractors as well as other miscellaneous hand and power equipment.

Maintain Highway Department buildings including grounds work and basic repairs.

Hook up plows, load sand, check routes, remove snow, sand roads, remove ice, put on chains, scrape ice with motor-graders and underbody plows.

Must be available for emergency response 24/7. Emergencies include snow, ice, floods, and storm damage.

Inspect and identify problems, both existing and potential, along county highways, and with equipment and buildings. Report problems and communicate detailed information to supervisor.

Perform other duties as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor and County Engineer.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Position requires a High School diploma, or equivalent, and two years experience in road maintenance and/or operating heavy equipment.

Must hold a Class B Commercial Drivers license with the ability to attain a Class A Commercial Drivers license within six month's time from start of employment.

MINIMUM ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to operate a variety of equipment - trucks, loaders, dozers, motor-graders, mowers, and general hand and power tools.

Must be able to move or carry job related objects and materials.

Requires the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work typically involving standing, walking, kneeling, lifting, pushing, pulling of objects or materials.

Requires ability to work in sub-zero temperatures as well as extreme heat and humidity.

Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Numerical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas: add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Language Ability:

Requires the ability to read a variety of documentations, directions, instructions, methods and procedures.

Requires the ability to prepare and maintain equipment, inventory and time records.

Interpersonal Communication:

Requires the ability to communicate with people to convey or exchange information.

Requires the ability to interact and communicate effectively with co-workers, vendors and suppliers to convey or exchange information, and give and receive instructions.

Environmental Adaptability:

Duties are preformed during the day and night including extreme weather conditions with exposure to various terrain, sun, extreme heat, sub-zero temperatures, high humidity, dust, insects, noxious weeds, traffic conditions that may be hazardous, and wetness due to rain and snow. Safety precautions and controls reduce the likelihood of exposure to noise, chemical fumes and exhaust that are present during the performance of some work duties.
