Job Summary

The Risk Management and Medical Staff Coordinator supports facility-level risk management, patient safety, and medical staff credentialing functions in alignment with organizational, legal, and regulatory standards. This role coordinates physician credentialing, reappointment, and committee activities while investigating potential risk or liability events, assisting in staff education, and collaborating with internal departments to enhance quality of care and reduce exposure to professional liability.

Essential Functions

Medical Staff Coordination

  • Manages the initial credentialing, reappointment, and privileging processes for physicians and allied health professionals.
  • Analyzes applications for completeness and accuracy; obtains and verifies primary source credentials.
  • Prepares and distributes meeting notifications, agendas, and minutes for Medical Staff and committee meetings.
  • Maintains an up-to-date credentialing database, privilege lists, and medical staff rosters.
  • Provides verification of medical staff membership and privileges as requested.
  • Ensures compliance with medical staff bylaws, Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulatory requirements.

Risk Management

  • Conducts investigations of incidents, complaints, and potential claims; gathers facts and documentation for legal review.
  • Identifies and analyzes trends related to patient safety and potential liability; collaborates with facility leaders to implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinates with Legal, Compliance, Clinical Operations, and Claims teams to mitigate identified risks.
  • Facilitates and documents risk management education for staff and leadership.
  • Participates in facility safety and quality committees, providing data and recommendations to improve outcomes.
  • Serves as liaison between the facility, patients, and families to address concerns and promote service recovery.

General

  • Maintains accurate and confidential records in compliance with organizational policies.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment, critical thinking, and effective communication in managing sensitive situations.
  • Supports facility leadership during surveys, audits, and regulatory inspections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, CMS, and state credentialing and risk management regulations.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities, including report preparation and presentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and credentialing or risk management databases.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to handle or feel.

  • Minimal exposure to bloodborne pathogens or hazardous materials.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree or two years of formal education in business, healthcare, or a related field required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related discipline preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) preferred.
  • Certification in Medical Staff Services Management (CPMSM or CPCS) preferred.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in healthcare operations, credentialing, or risk management required.
  • Experience in acute or long-term care settings preferred.
