About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Digital Products), to join our team in Fremont, California. In this pivotal role, you will lead the development and scaling of digital solutions that enhance customer experience and operational efficiency. Your responsibilities will include guiding a team of talented engineers, designing robust backend architectures, and collaborating with cross-functional teams including product, design, and engineering management. You will oversee the technical execution of key digital products such as order management, customer management, vehicle connectivity, mobile applications, and more. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the technical foundation of Scout Motors' digital ecosystem, ensuring scalable, reliable, and innovative solutions that support our mission of revolutionizing electric vehicles. As a leader, you will foster engineering excellence, mentor team members, and drive large-scale projects from conception to deployment, all while maintaining a hands-on approach to software development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field
- 10+ years of professional experience in software engineering with a focus on scalable digital products
- Proven leadership experience in managing high-performing engineering teams for 5+ years
- Extensive experience with APIs, microservices, and complex backend systems
- Strong coding proficiency in languages such as GoLang, Java, Kotlin, and Swift
- Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines supporting web and mobile releases
- Knowledge of system vulnerabilities and security best practices
- Experience operating in startup environments, launching products from zero to scale
- Ability to lead large projects (6+ months), define roadmaps, and coordinate across multiple teams
- Experience integrating third-party platforms and external service providers
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentorship skills
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of software engineers to develop scalable, reliable, and innovative digital solutions
- Design, develop, deploy, and operate backend architectures supporting key digital products
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and cross-functional teams to translate business needs into technical solutions
- Assess and recommend technology tools, frameworks, and platforms to support current and future needs
- Drive technical strategy, including build vs. buy decisions, and influence enterprise architecture
- Lead large technical projects, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality standards
- Establish and improve engineering best practices, metrics, and operational processes
- Participate hands-on in coding, system design, and troubleshooting to ensure the success of critical initiatives
- Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence
- Coordinate with external partners and vendors to integrate third-party solutions effectively
- Support the continuous improvement of software development lifecycle and delivery pipelines
