About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Overhead Line Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. Based across the UK, with options for hybrid working from our Leeds, Stowmarket, or London offices, this role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to significant overhead line (OHL) projects involving new build and refurbishment initiatives. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing and delivering complex overhead line solutions, providing technical expertise and leadership within the team. This position requires travel for client meetings, site inspections, and internal project reviews, ensuring seamless communication and project execution across multiple locations.
The Overhead Line Design Engineer will work closely with the team lead, supporting project planning, technical development, and the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions. They will be responsible for the entire design lifecycle, from conceptual development through detailed engineering, ensuring compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and client specifications. The role offers a chance to work on projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV, contributing to the UK’s critical power transmission infrastructure.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background and practical experience in electrical engineering, specifically related to overhead line design. A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is essential. Candidates should have proven experience working within the power transmission and distribution industry, with a solid understanding of OHL design principles, standards, and best practices in the UK. Professional certification or progress towards chartership is highly encouraged, with the company actively supporting career development in this area.
Essential qualifications include experience in designing, calculating, and producing technical reports and drawings for OHL projects. Proficiency in design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER is required, alongside a good knowledge of AutoCAD 3D. Knowledge of MicroStation CAD software and relevant safety regulations such as CDM 2015 and the Electricity Safety, Quality, and Continuity Regulations will be advantageous. Candidates must hold a full UK driving license and, ideally, a CSCS card or equivalent safety certification.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of overhead line projects, ensuring all designs meet technical, safety, and client requirements.
Perform conductor sizing, line routing, insulation selection, and lighting protection planning, utilizing PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER software for modeling and analysis.
Create comprehensive technical documentation including engineering reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations, maintaining accuracy and adherence to industry standards.
Develop project proposals, defining scope, resource allocation, cost estimates, and deliverables to ensure successful project execution.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and team members, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and site teams through meetings, site visits, and inspections to ensure project alignment and progress.
Operate within the company's quality assurance framework and project management methodologies, maintaining high standards throughout project delivery.
Stay updated on industry regulations, safety standards, and technological advancements relevant to overhead line design and power transmission.
