Overview
We are seeking a reliable and thoughtful Direct Support Professional (DSP) to support an autistic adult in daily life, routines, and community engagement. This role is relationship-based and mentorship-oriented, focusing on consistency, practical support, and helping someone build a steady, meaningful day-to-day life.
This is a 1:1 direct support role. The DSP will work directly with one pereson throughout each shift. Hourly compensation is between $26-27 per hour. Work location is Fairdale.
The individual also lives with Type 1 diabetes. While medical management is not the primary responsibility of this role, basic awareness and attentiveness are important, along with the ability to communicate concerns to the care team.
This position is well-suited for someone who values one-to-one support, enjoys working alongside someone (not "doing for"), and understands how structure and encouragement support independence.
Core Responsibilities
Direct Support & Mentorship
- Provide one-to-one direct support in home and community settings
- Support daily routines, planning, and follow-through
- Assist with organization, time management, and transitions
- Encourage independence while offering consistent guidance
- Use clear, respectful communication and support strategies
- Serve as a calm, reliable presence
Community & Life Skills Support
- Support participation in preferred activities and interests
- Encourage community involvement and social connection
- Support development of daily living and life skills
- Assist with problem-solving in real-life situations
- Help build structure without being rigid or controlling
Type 1 Diabetes Awareness (Supportive Role)
- Maintain general awareness of Type 1 diabetes routines
- Recognize basic signs of low or high blood sugar
- Support reminders around meals, snacks, or timing as needed
- Communicate concerns promptly to family or medical supports
- Follow established guidance; medical decisions are handled by others
Communication & Team Collaboration
- Communicate clearly with family and support team
- Share observations about routines, stressors, or successes
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Provide consistent updates as requested
Experience & Skills Required
- Experience supporting individuals with disabilities or related experience
- Comfort providing structured, one-to-one support
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Reliable, patient, and consistent
Preferred
- Prior experience as a Direct Support Professional (DSP)
- Experience supporting autistic adults
- Familiarity with community-based support models
- Basic familiarity with Type 1 diabetes or willingness to learn

About This Role
