The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled temporary Economic Analyst to better understand the economy of Nevada, Clark County, and the region. Work on economic data collection, research, analysis, and reporting to contribute to the growth of the Southern Nevada economy.

The economic analyst is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of empirical economic models, surveys, and conducting sponsored research projects to support the mission of the Center for Business and Economic Research and our research team under the Research Director and the Associate Research Director. They will provide analysis in research projects that assist in the development of the Nevada economy, with special emphasis on the Southern Nevada business community. Business planning, analysis of economic surveys, and reporting for various research projects the center conducts on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. They will report primarily to the Associate Research Director for research projects and to the Program Manager (Associate Director of Programs and Operations) for any event-related activities. If either is not involved in a specific project, reporting will default to the project's assigned lead.

As needed, they will meet with sponsored project research clients to become familiar with the client's needs and role responsibilities. This role will work with internal and external departments to research, explain, and resolve questions related to the Southern Nevada economy. They will work on periodic white papers. In supervision with the Associate Research Director, they will help with the skill development and oversight of student workers. Perform additional analytical work as needed to support ongoing applied economic work by the Associate Research Director, Director of Research, and Director of CBER. A portion of their time will be assisting our Program Manager (Associate Director of Programs and Operations) with producing CBER's eight public events: Economic Advisory Council breakfasts, quarterly Brews and Economic Views, and annual Outlook.

Essential Functions in order of time commitment

Research Projects:

This position will conduct economic research on sponsored projects with senior CBER staff. Conducts applied economic analysis and writes research reports and white papers as instructed by the Associate Research Director to provide the foundation for conducting further research for sponsored research projects brought by sponsors.

Data analysis and economic modeling:

This position will assist with data analysis, survey analysis, and empirical economic modeling to help, for example, evaluate the functioning of the economy and the evaluation of economic outcomes. They will work in conjunction with the Associate Research Director, supporting his/her efforts and reporting to the Research Director and Director.

Assistance with Event Management:

At the direction ofCBER's Program manager (Associate Director of Programs and Operations), this position will assist with event production and set up and take down such as quarterly stakeholder breakfasts (3x), quarterly Brews and Economic Views, and annual Economic Outlook. Duties include reporting to the Program Manager (Associate Director of Programs and Operations) on various tasks (e.g., registration, signage, materials preparation, guest check-in) related to the successful completion of events (such as Outlook, Brews and Economic Views, or other events). This position will work with the Program Manager (Associate Director of Programs and Operations) to coordinate and manage volunteers and student workers to ensure the smooth execution of event tasks.

Periodic Reporting, Dashboard, and Visualization Maintenance:

This position will work on dashboards and data visualization for public, industry, and government stakeholders that support understanding the growth of the Southern Nevada economy and contribute to the mission of CBER of applied economic research and monitoring of economic conditions, with periodic reporting to the Associate Research Director.

Assist with the supervision of student workers:

This position will instruct and oversee student workers as assigned by the Associate Research Director, mainly undergraduates, to ensure the timely completion of reports/projects. This includes the production of CBER's weekly newsletter, the Rebel Business Indicators, which is overseen by CBER's Director and Research Director, along with the Director of Communications.

Instruction includes not only editing their papers and providing guidance to improve future work, but also mentoring students in professional skills, task execution, and task responsibilities to help them develop the confidence and competence needed for independent work. Provide feedback to the Associate Research Director regarding student performance.

Literature review and research, or other research and event duties as assigned:

Along with senior CBER staff, meets with industry, business, and nonprofit professionals to become familiar with needs and possibly opportunities for further applied economic research.

Presentations:

Assists in preparing materials for client meetings, such as the Southern Nevada Economic Outlook conferences and Economic Advisory Council breakfasts, when needed.

Data Skill Requirements:

Proficient in statistical software: Excel and familiarity with R Studio, and/or EViews, Python, and data visualization tools (Power BI).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge

Required

Strong Skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, R (or Python), Power BI,, and Qualtrics

Ability to work on multiple, concurrent tasks with tight schedules.

Multitask and pivot when necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work across functional business groups to resolve discrepancies and implement solutions.

Preferred

Analytical skills appropriate for economic model development and interpretation.

Experience using economics as part of the policy process.

Skills

Required

Proficient in statistical software: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Arc GIS, and familiarity with R Studio, and/or EViews, Python, and data visualization tools (Power BI).

Abilities

Required

The Analyst is required to undertake any number of data collection, research, analysis, and reporting tasks. Applicant needs to be a strong critical thinker with a demonstrated ability to diligently undertake and successfully complete research and analytical projects.

Needs to be proficient in MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word. Preference will be given to applicants who also have experience in database analysis using Excel, R (or Python, and data visualization such as Power BI and Qualtrics (for surveys). Ability to multitask, set priorities, and work efficiently in a high-paced environment, supervise undergraduate students, while working with senior faculty.

Required experience (1-3 years):

Experience working with local industry, government, and nonprofit stakeholders in the use of economic theories and tools to provide analysis for business or policy decisions.

Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Master's degree preferred.

39 hours a week

Potential hire as a permanent position (dependent on performance)

Pay: $67, $71,000.00 per year
