Pay Range: $ $26.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, position is responsible for the safety and well-being of the swim lesson participants. Performs swim lesson instructor duties as assigned by the Aquatics Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors swimmers for safety associated with Swim Lesson Instructor duties.
  • Completes swim lesson reports and records assigned by the Aquatics Manager/Assistant Manager.
  • Follows safety directives established by the City, County, State, Federal and Aquatics Manager.
  • Displays the knowledge and has the ability to perform the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Skilled in verbal communication with both children and adults.
  • Available to work 7 to 10 hours every week during scheduled swim lessons.
  • Develop & implement lesson plans effectively.
  • Maintain positive relationships with students, parents & community patrons.
  • Model the four major strokes and other swimming techniques in & out of the water.
  • Be fully trained in the Bonner Springs Aquatic Park swim lesson program.
  • Performs duties of the Swim Lesson Instructor as required or scheduled.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies.
  • Provide first aid and emergency CPR if needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members and management.
  • Work additional hours & attend meetings as requested by management.
  • Maintain swim lesson equipment and supplies in proper working order, in an orderly, clean manner.
  • Report to swim lessons properly dressed and ready to assume responsibilities a minimum
    of 15 minutes early.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance records for your classes and yourself.
  • Fill out progress reports completely and prior to the last day of class.
  • Possess mobility to handle up to 6 children in the water at one time.
  • Performs other duties deemed necessary and assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

  • Interact with the public in a professional manner and communicate clearly and concisely with others, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow safe operational policies and procedures, enforce department policies and procedures, and interpret written instructions and manuals
  • Establish successful working relationships with co-workers, volunteers and the public, and use good professional judgment, honesty, and integrity in decision making.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
  • CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required:
  • Must be at least 17 years of age

  • Preferred:

  • High School Diploma

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard and First Aid, and CPR required.
  • Must be a currently certified lifeguard, or must obtain a lifeguard certification prior to employment.
  • AED certification or the ability to obtain in two (2) months of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Majority of work is in a busy aquatic setting, exposed to wet/humid conditions, with moderate to loud noise and frequent interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Exposed to acceptable levels of chlorine, acid, sodium bicarbonate and calcium chloride.
  • Occasionally exposed to paint and cleaning chemicals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing, and using hands to handle or feel; requires standing, swimming, walking, and reaching with hands and arms, and the ability to bend, balance, stoop, stretch, reach, carry, and grasp objects; and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Work requires near and far vision acuity, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Physically able to complete a 300-yard swim and perform all appropriate lifeguard skills.

This position is subject to EVRPD's pre-employment screening requirements including, but not limited to:
