CHIEF BUILDING INSPECTOR-STRUCTURAL: $84,824.00-$131, SL5)Bargaining Group: Unrepresented/AppointedFLSA Status: ExemptThis is supervisory and administrative work in the planning, organizing and directing of personnel responsible for the inspection of construction work and the review of building plans for compliance with applicable codes and regulations. This position works within an assigned discipline (mechanical, electrical, structural, or plumbing) and requires considerable independence and good judgment in interpreting codes and safety standards. Reports to the Building Official.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Supervises subordinate inspectors and plans reviewers; supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others, coordinating activities and acting on employee problems. Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; offers advice and assistance as needed.Reviews all plans and specifications for compliance with national, county and city codes, as appropriate. Approves or disapproves plans and specifications; prepares required documentation and recommendations.Interprets provisions of the Florida Building Code.Schedules and participates in building inspections; investigates related complaints.Inspects fire damage to buildings and unsafe structures on a 24 hour per day, on call basis.Processes building code compliance cases.Meets with homeowner's/property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, etc., to resolve complaints and to answer questions pertaining to code compliance and procedures.Performs general administrative/office work as required, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.Interacts and communicates with the immediate supervisor, co-workers, subordinates, other City department personnel, property owners, developers, contractors, architects, engineers, county personnel, general public, etc.Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment, including a computer, calculator, telephone, engineer/architect's scale, etc.Performs related duties as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of building construction.Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of the installation and maintenance of equipment, appliances, and devices related to the applicable discipline.Knowledge of building codes, laws, and regulations.Ability to read and interpret building plans, diagrams, and specifications.Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment. Ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction of superiors in a positive, receptive manner and in accordance with stated policies and procedures.Ability to demonstrate a polite, helpful and courteous manner when engaged in any activity with the general public.Ability to operate and care for equipment to manufacturer's specifications and/or within the specified parameters.Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the general public and colleagues.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires moderate physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds. May require frequent crouching, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Frequent periods of standing or walking may be required.**It is the responsibility of the candidate to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.** Emergency Management Responsibilities: Note: During emergency conditions, all City of Miramar employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City of Miramar employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
