The full salary range for this position is as follows: Senior Lifeguard $23.61 to $26.02. Expected hiring range is $23.61- $24.77 Head Lifeguard $24.77 to $27.32. Expected hiring range is as follows: $24.77 to $26.02.
Senior Lifeguard
Assist with the planning, organization and supervision of the aquatic activities and maintenance at the City's aquatics facilities; instruct water safety and lifesaving classes; serve as a lifeguard; and perform related work as required.

Head Lifeguard
To plan, organize and supervise the aquatic activities and maintenance at the City's aquatics facilities; instruct water safety and lifesaving classes; serve as a lifeguard; and perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

General supervision is provided by the professional staff. Exercises indirect supervision over part-time staff.

Examples Of Essential Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Senior Lifeguard

  • Attend all mandatory trainings.
  • Perform duties necessary to operate a City pool facility.
  • Supervise and complete all records and reports.
  • Assist with assigning, scheduling, directing and evaluating of all pool personnel.
  • Address various staff issues, including creating and managing staff schedules.
  • Assist with the testing and training of aquatic personnel.
  • Facilitate proper communication among City staff and patrons.
  • Respond to patron inquiries and assist with complaint resolution.
  • Practice preventative lifeguarding techniques.
  • Assess and respond to distress situations. Administer first aid and or CPR as needed.
  • Conduct programs offered to the public.
  • Conduct routine water chemistry tests, assist with minor pool maintenance and ensure required equipment is properly placed and functioning.
  • Ensure pool facility is clean and orderly.
  • Perform the duties of Head Lifeguard in their absence.
  • Perform duties as assigned.

Head Lifeguard
Perform all duties as outlined in the Senior Lifeguard job description, plus:

  • Assisting in the recruitment, testing and training of aquatic personnel.
  • Assigning, scheduling, directing and evaluating of all personnel.
  • Assisting with the planning and implementation of programs and activities.
  • Ability to be an effective link between the pool, the aquatic facility and Parks & Recreation Department.

Experience & Training / License And/Or Certificate
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Senior Lifeguard

  • Graduation from high school and 2 years of summer season experience or 1 year of continual service as a lifeguard and/or swimming instructor.
  • Current Lifeguard Training Certificate and Water Safety Instructor.
  • Certificate or considerable experience in the maintenance and operation of Dry Town Water Park.
  • Lifeguard Instructor preferred.

Head Lifeguard

  • Completed college course work in recreation, physical education or a related field, or considerable experience in the maintenance ad operation of public swimming pools and/ or operation of Dry Town Water Park.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Water Safety Instructor certificates are required.
  • Current Lifeguard Training Instructor Certificate preferred.
  • 3 years lifeguard experience and/ or swimming instructor.
  • 1 year Senior Lifeguard experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge & Abilities

  • Departmental procedures and policies as applied to the operation of swimming pools and the maintenance of related records and reports.
  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of public swimming pools; rescue methods and first aid as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding areas.
  • Knowledge of equipment and chemicals used to maintain swimming pools.
  • Instruct techniques of swimming and lifesaving; to plan and supervise the work of others engaged in operating a

large public swimming pool; to maintain adequate operating records; to establish and maintain effective working

relationships with coworkers and the public; skill in administering first aid; skill in swimming.

Additional Information
An online application is required for this position. Applicants will be required to complete a mandatory swim test at a location to be given to qualified applicants. Online City application must be submitted prior to testing. Every applicant will have to pass the following swim test: 1. A timed 500 yard swim continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. Times must be under 9:30. 2. Complete a timed event within1 minute, 40 seconds. * Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. * Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. * Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
