About the Role

The Video Playback Engineering team is seeking a talented Senior Software Engineer to join our media engineering division, focusing on the Roku playback library. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining a media playback package that supports Disney's direct-to-consumer brands such as Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams, including encoding, packaging, delivery, and front-end teams, to ensure a seamless and consistent streaming experience across all platforms. The primary goal is to optimize the Disney Streaming technology stack for high-quality, reliable playback on all devices, with a particular emphasis on Roku devices. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to Disney's legacy of storytelling and innovation by enhancing the user experience through advanced media playback solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in software development.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing applications for Roku using Brightscript.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present data clearly.
  • Proven experience at a senior or lead software engineering level.
  • Experience working with media playback technologies such as MSE/EME, HLS, MPEG-DASH, Transport Stream, CMAF is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and design robust APIs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new features for media playback solutions that integrate seamlessly with Disney's media services and backend systems.
  • Collaborate with peer teams to define and refine API interfaces and ensure consistency across platforms.
  • Conduct research and development to enhance media playback experiences, including testing and integration efforts.
  • Participate actively in project planning, sprint reviews, and team operations to ensure timely delivery of features.
  • Maintain and improve the Roku playback library, ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Identify and troubleshoot playback issues, providing effective solutions and optimizations.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in streaming technologies and incorporate best practices into development processes.
