Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:
Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Speech-Language Therapy

Master's Degree in Speech Pathology and/or Audiology

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO: Principal/Director of Special Education, and under the direct supervision of a Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)

JOB GOAL:
The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) provides speech, language, and communication services under the supervision and direction of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. The SLPA supports students in achieving communication goals, implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and treatment plans, assists in screenings, and maintains accurate service documentation in compliance with state and federal regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Training Pathways (must meet one of the following):

Two-year degree pathway:
Completion of a Board-approved Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program from an accredited institution.

Completion of prerequisite courses in ethics, universal safety precautions, and confidentiality.

Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders pathway:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Completion of ASHA online education modules (or equivalent Board-approved program).

Completion of prerequisite courses in ethics, universal safety precautions, and confidentiality.

Equivalent coursework pathway:
Associate's or bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Completion of equivalent speech-language pathology assistant coursework covering:

Introduction to communication disorders

Phonetics

Speech sound disorders

Language development

Language disorders

Anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing

Completion of prerequisite courses in ethics, universal safety precautions, and confidentiality.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of speech and language development principles.

Ability to implement therapy activities as directed by the supervising SLP.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with students, families, and staff.

Commitment to ethical practice and confidentiality.

Competence in maintaining organized records and reports.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide direct speech-language therapy services, individually or in groups, as outlined in treatment plans or Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), under direct supervision.

Implement evidence-based instructional and therapeutic activities as planned by the supervising SLP to improve speech, language, fluency, voice, and communication skills.

Assist in the collection of data for progress monitoring, evaluation, and maintenance of records.

Share observations of student progress or concerns with the supervising SLP for program planning and adjustments.

Assist in the completion of speech and language screenings, without interpretation, under the direction of the supervising SLP.

Support indirect services, including preparation of therapy materials, equipment, and workspaces for student sessions, scheduling, and documentation.

Support the use and maintenance of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, as directed.

Maintain strict adherence to ethical guidelines and SLPA scope of practice, universal safety precautions, and relevant confidentiality laws (e.g., IDEA, FERPA).

Communicate regularly with the supervising SLP to discuss student progress, concerns, and treatment adjustments.

Participate in professional development as required by licensing standards and Prince George County Public Schools (PGCPS) policy.

Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires the ability to work directly with children in individual and group arrangements in the school setting.

Involves interaction with the supervising SLP for both direct and indirect supervision.

Positions that are itinerant will involve frequent travel between schools and may require the periodic transportation of instructional materials and equipment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
10-month contract; Salary based upon teacher's scale

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Personnel and in collaboration with the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
