Job Description:
Job Purpose
The purpose of the Clinical Laboratory Coordinator is to oversee the daily operation of the clinical laboratory. This person is responsible for ensuring staff competency, regulatory compliance, and performing essential job functions as a lab technician to provide coverage when needed.
Essential Job Functions
Technical:
- Assist with scheduling of staff to meet needs.
- Responsible for laboratory daily/monthly reports and audits.
- Assist laboratory manager with review of required documentation.
- Assist lab manager with implementing and maintaining the Laboratory Information System (LIS), EMR, reference laboratories, and any other computer systems utilized by the laboratory or practice.
- Maintain working knowledge of instrumentation and processes at applicable clinical laboratory sites.
- Aid management in writing/reviewing policies and procedures.
- Facilitate phlebotomy/lab tech competency assessments and performance evaluations
- Administrator of document control system
QA/QC/Regulatory:
- Assist with regulatory compliance requirements
- Participate in continuous improvement activities, examine existing processes/procedures, and look for ways to improve them
- Review quality control and complete QA reports when required
- Participate in proficiency testing when required
- Assign proficiency testing and review performance evaluations
- Report any adverse events, errors, and/or complaints to lab management/director
- Assist with performance specifications and validation of new instruments, reagents, supplies, and processes.
- Other general administrative duties as required.
Safety/Organizational/Productivity:
- Follow institution's safety procedures, as well as adhere to all regulatory standards.
- Complies with the clinical laboratory's policy and procedures.
- Follow Infection Control policy and wear PPE.
- Professional development, including annual CEUs.
Communication/Teamwork:
- Effectively answer questions and concerns regarding the clinical laboratory from patients, coworkers, and physician/nursing staff.
Qualifications
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Must demonstrate satisfactory verbal and written communication.
- Maintain positive working relationship with fellow staff and clinic personnel.
- Must be able to prioritize and manage tasks in a timely and effective manner.
Education/Experience
- Associate degree in Laboratory Science or other Biological Sciences, Bachelor's degree preferred
- Certified or licensed in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology (ASCP or AMT)
- 2 years' experience in a clinical lab setting including phlebotomy
- 1-year supervisory experience of clinical lab staff
- Knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures of the clinical laboratories.
Working Conditions
This position is in the clinical laboratory of a busy outpatient hematology/oncology clinic. This person will be required to travel to all CCI locations and work closely with clinical lab staff and other department managers. This position also requires that the employee handle body fluids and chemicals daily.
Physical Requirements
This position requires that the employee be able to stand and/or walk for up to eight hours a day and perform mild physical labor to complete essential job functions. This position also requires the employee use a computer for up to two-thirds of the day while standing or sitting. The employee will also be required to wear personal protective equipment when handling patient specimens.
