Job Description Summary Organization's Summary Statement:
This position works with the HVAC division and other members of the University of Maryland College Park campus community to assure that the Staefa Energy Management System, Automated Logic Controls System and The Talon Systems are programmed and operated in such a manner that heating, ventilating and air conditioning needs, as well as energy conservation goals are met. The position shall be expected to program, download, and test programming modules to achieve pre-determined sequences of operation for campus HVAC equipment using Direct Digital Control; define alarms and alarm routing for campus equipment and rooms; and create and modify HVAC graphical user interfaces.
The position shall work closely with customers and employees to assist in troubleshooting computer-based systems hardware and software problems, be proficient with IT/IP tools and ensure all software is promptly updated and managed. Additionally, the position shall monitor buildings distributed controller communication networks, troubleshoot, test and restore Network Controller programs, drivers, and software, and replace Network Controller devices including JACES, LGR's, routers and switches.
Physical Demands:
This position is primarily field based. While some duties may be performed in an office setting, frequent site visits to mechanical systems, central plants, and penthouse work areas are a core aspect of the role. These visits are required for training, inspection, and operational support, and often necessitate the use of personal protective equipment and involve navigating active, high-demand environments. The work is fast-paced and demanding, requiring strong critical thinking skills and sound judgment to respond effectively to unexpected system failures, including those caused by extreme weather conditions, IT power demands, and capacity-related events.
The position is telework-eligible on a limited basis, with a telework agreement and prior approval.
It is designated as Essential and subject to a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week operational schedule.
Preferences:
•Advanced technical training e.g., Tridium AX certification or Automated Logic professional programming experience.
•Application programming experience with Tridium AX or N4 JACE (Java Application Control Engine), Distech, Automated Logic Web Control or Staefa MS1800/Smart II building automation control systems.
•Proficiency working in DOS, Unix based SCO, Linux and/or Windows based Operating Systems and experience working in VM Ware virtual environment.
•Basic background in electronics, fluid dynamics, mechanical systems, and principles of air conditioning and refrigeration in particular Variable and Constant Volume Systems.
Licenses/ Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a Maryland Class C driver's license or equivalent with fewer than six (6) points.Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Five (5) years experience working with HVAC automation systems.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of electronics, fluid dynamics, mechanical systems, and principles of air conditioning and refrigeration in particular Variable and Constant Volume Systems.
Knowledge of HVAC automation systems, application programming, and networks.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
