Essential Job Functions
This position will work in all areas of the Paternity Division within the Baltimore City Circuit Court. This position is responsible for processing and maintaining paternity case files by reviewing pleadings, typing appropriate entries into the automated database, forwarding true test copies to all parties, and filing case pleadings in case folders. Schedules court hearing dates. Ensures case files are delivered to courtrooms prior to hearings. Assists the public and attorneys by providing information about the status of cases and the Clerk?s office procedures, both at the counter and by telephone. Prepares summons and other writs. Index new cases. Collects bail and processes appropriate paperwork for releases. Serve as cashier as needed.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Initiate new cases and issue summons.

Review pleadings, enter appropriate docket entries into the automated database, and file court files.

Schedule court hearings.

Ensure case files are delivered to the courtroom before the court hearing date.

Assist the public and attorneys by providing information about the status of cases and the Clerk?s office procedure.

Collect bail and process appropriate paperwork for releases.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience
: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note
A bachelor?s degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/associate?s degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge Of
General office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill In
Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.

Typing on a personal computer. Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability To
Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.

Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Physical Requirements
*Light work. *
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Computer, telephone, cash register, copier, and fax machine.

Software And Computer Skills
Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook; Odyssey, File & Serve, Zoom and Skype communication.
