Job Summary

The Assistant Manager (AM) at Hemingway's Tavern helps the General Manager to ensure that day-to-day business operations of the restaurant run smoothly. They also assist the General Manager with training, recruiting, weekly schedules, ordering merchandise and planning. The AM competently performs duties in the absence of the General Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the restaurant to meet Hemingway's Tavern standards.
  • Estimate food consumption, place orders with suppliers, and schedule delivery of fresh food and beverages.
  • Resolve customer complaints about food quality or service.
  • Direct cleaning of kitchen and dining areas to maintain sanitation standards and keep appropriate records.
  • Monitor actions of staff and guests to ensure that health and safety standards and liquor regulations are obeyed.
  • Maintain budget and staff records, prepare payroll, and pay bills, or monitor bookkeeping records.
  • Use computer software to monitor inventory, track staff schedules and pay, and perform other record keeping tasks.
  • Check quality of deliveries of fresh food and baked goods.
  • Meet with sales representatives to order supplies such as tableware, cooking utensils, and cleaning items.
  • Arrange for maintenance and repair of equipment and other services.
  • Total receipts and balance against sales, deposit receipts, and lock facility at end of day.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training for staff.
  • Schedule work hours for servers and kitchen staff.
  • Monitor food preparation and methods.
  • Schedule staff work hours and activities.
  • Evaluate health and safety practices against standards.
  • Make decisions and solve problems concerning menus and staff.
  • Judge the quality of food preparation.
  • Record information about inventory and health practices.
  • Monitor food preparation and cleaning methods.
  • Clean, inspect and maintain equipment.
  • Monitor and oversee purchases, menus, staff, and payroll.
  • Guide, direct, and train staff.
  • Coordinate the work and activities of staff.
  • Perform administrative activities such as scheduling, budgeting, and payroll.
  • Communicate with guests, sales reps, and suppliers.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office/ Excel and/or Google sheets
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with managers, kitchen, and dining room staff and guests.
  • Understand management bonus structure and how your decisions and actions affect it.
  • Proficient at FOH set-up and server sectioning
  • Proficient at server checkouts and money handling
  • Proficient at Point-of- Sale systems
  • Previous Restaurant Supervisory, Management, or Leadership experience
  • Food Handler certification, strongly preferred
  • Must have flexible and open availability
  • Ability to direct, support, and drive excellence
  • Ability to maintain all kitchen standards
  • Highly motivated and organized.

Physical Requirements

  • Some lifting and the movement of moderate loads require a 50-pound lifting requirement.
  • Responsible for utilizing office equipment. The effective operation of equipment requires the use of all limbs, fingers, and the ability to see.
  • Often working indoors, but occasionally required to work outdoors.
  • Spends approximately 80% of his/her time standing and walking swiftly, therefore, he/she must have the ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and move freely using all limbs and seeing at close/long distances.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, etc. as well as visit other locations, off site locations, etc.; therefore, he/she must be able to travel autonomously, possibly to other geographical locations.
  • Flexible availability to fill in where coverage is needed, including nights and weekends.
  • Expectation to work an approximately a or more) hour work week, scheduled to meet critical coverage hours.
