Position Overview:

The Automotive General Sales Manager (GSM) is responsible for overseeing the sales department within an automotive dealership, managing both new and pre-owned vehicle sales operations, and ensuring the department meets or exceeds sales and profitability targets. The GSM leads a team of sales professionals, creates effective sales strategies, and works closely with other departments to optimize the customer buying experience. This leadership role requires an individual with strong sales skills, leadership abilities, and a deep understanding of the automotive industry.

Key Responsibilities:

The General Sales Manager has the following responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the sales team to meet or exceed dealership sales goals, both for new and pre-owned vehicles.
  • Develop and implement sales strategies and tactics to maximize revenue, profit, and customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor daily sales activities and performance metrics, providing guidance, support, and accountability to the sales team.
  • Conduct regular sales meetings to ensure staff alignment, product knowledge, and motivation.
  • Oversee the entire vehicle sales process, from initial customer inquiry to vehicle delivery, ensuring that all sales processes are efficient, customer-centric, and compliant with dealership standards.
  • Monitor and refine sales procedures to improve conversion rates and customer satisfaction.
  • Work closely with the finance and insurance (F&I) department to ensure smooth transitions from sales to financing, maximizing profits and compliance.
  • Ensure high standards of customer service throughout the sales process, with a focus on building long-term customer relationships and repeat business.
  • Handle escalated customer concerns and complaints to maintain a positive dealership reputation.
  • Conduct follow-up with customers post-sale to ensure satisfaction and promote customer loyalty.
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new sales staff, ensuring they are properly trained on dealership products, sales techniques, and customer service expectations.
  • Implement ongoing training programs to develop sales skills, product knowledge, and the ability to close deals.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to individual team members to improve performance and achieve career growth.
  • Work closely with the inventory manager to maintain proper inventory levels, ensuring the right mix of new and pre-owned vehicles is available for sale.
  • Monitor vehicle pricing and adjust as needed to remain competitive within the market while maintaining profitability.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure proper vehicle displays, promotions, and online listings are up-to-date and effective in driving traffic.
  • Track and analyze daily, weekly, and monthly sales data to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide regular sales reports and forecasts to the General Manager or Dealer Principal, detailing performance against goals.
  • Implement corrective actions when sales targets are not met, identifying root causes and solutions.
  • Work closely with the F&I team to create vehicle financing packages that maximize sales and profitability.

Requirements:

The General Sales Manager should have the following skills, education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field (preferred). Equivalent experience in automotive sales management may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in automotive sales, with at least 2 years in a management or leadership role.
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets in the automotive industry.
  • Strong understanding of dealership operations, vehicle sales, and financing processes.
  • Exceptional leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with both customers and team members.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to track and interpret sales data to drive decision-making.
  • Proficiency in dealership management systems (DMS), CRM software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
