Job Overview
The Part-Time Thrift Store Employee supports daily retail operations at the Foster Army Animal Rescue Thrift Store and may serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) during assigned shifts. This role is hands-on and customer-facing, with responsibilities that include opening and closing the store, register operations, donation intake, volunteer support, and ensuring a welcoming, organized, and mission-driven shopping experience. The ideal candidate enjoys working in an animal-loving environment and believes in supporting animal rescue. Proceeds from the store directly support animal rescue efforts.
Duties
Store Operations & Manager on Duty Duties
- Open and close the store following established procedures
- Serve as Manager on Duty when scheduled, acting as the primary point of contact during the shift
- Ensure smooth daily workflow, including task prioritization and coverage
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized sales floor and donation areas
- Address operational issues and escalate concerns when needed
Customer Service & Sales
- Provide friendly, helpful customer service in alignment with the organization's mission
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system accurately, including cash and credit transactions
- Answer customer questions regarding merchandise, pricing, donations, and store policies
- Handle customer concerns professionally and respectfully
Donations & Merchandise
- Accept, sort, and process donations according to store guidelines
- Assist with pricing, tagging, stocking, and rotating merchandise
- Ensure donation and processing areas remain organized and efficient
Volunteer Support & Training
- Support, guide, and work alongside volunteers during shifts
- Assist with training new volunteers on basic store tasks, register use, and policies
- Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for volunteers and staff
Additional Duties
- Follow all safety, loss prevention, and nonprofit compliance procedures
- Support special sales, promotions, and events as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills
Prior retail or customer service experience preferred
Comfortable handling cash and using a POS system
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Reliable, punctual, and flexible with scheduling
Interest in animal welfare and nonprofit work
Alignment with the mission and values of Foster Army Animal Rescue
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods
Ability to lift and move items up to approximately 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
