Job Description:

Summary

Illinois Central College is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure track position in Biology to begin Fall 2026. The Biology Faculty coordinate, plan, prepare, present, and evaluate classroom instruction in a variety of Biology courses. The Faculty support innovation, demonstrate exceptional teaching skills, and display enthusiasm, respect, and ability to work effectively with diverse students, colleagues, and staff. The academic program promotes innovative teaching, quality scholarship, diverse learning, equitable access, and educational achievement for all students.

This position will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in a variety of biology courses. Full-time faculty must be available to teach during the day, evenings, and/or weekends as determined by the schedule of classes offered to meet student needs. The academic year base salary and rank will be determined based on the educational preparation and occupational and/or teaching experience of the successful candidate.

Essential Functions

  • Teaches assigned courses and assesses learning outcomes. Courses assigned may include general education biology, principles of biology, anatomy and physiology, and / or microbiology.
  • Prepares syllabi, instructional materials, lab activities, tests, and assessments in accordance with course institutional syllabi, college policies, and articulation and accreditation parameters.
  • Prepares, sets up, and tears down lab activity materials, leads and coordinates with adjunct and early college instructors, and ensures adequate supplies are ordered and materials prepared for assigned lead and / or prep course sections on multiple campuses.
  • Seeks professional development to remain current with discipline, emerging technology, and the latest teaching tools. Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Works collaboratively with full-time and adjunct faculty members.
  • Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Collaborates with teaching teams to connect with students, engage students in learning, assess student learning, and assist with continuous quality improvement and systematic evaluation of the biology program curriculum, policies, and practices.
  • Actively participates in the department, serves on college committees, and participates in institutional meetings.
  • Performs assigned duties during the day, evening and/or weekend on any assigned campus, including teaching courses in different modalities.
  • Exhibits strong time management skills to ensure timely communication, grading, and completion of other job responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

  • Master's degree or higher in Biology (or a closely related field) with 18+ hours in graduate Biology coursework
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analyzing and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking and decision-making skills.
  • Strong organizing and prioritizing skills to meet critical deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with others.
  • Strong ethic of collaborative and cooperative work with colleagues.
  • Ability to serve the needs of a diverse population of students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Community college and/or secondary biology teaching experience.
  • Undergraduate biology or related degree or biology coursework with laboratory experience.
