Job Summary

Perform maintenance and repair on Fire trucks, tandems, specialty vehicles, automobiles, and light equipment. Responsibilities involve diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining multiple systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components. Preparing new vehicles for service by reviewing specifications and installing specialized equipment is also required.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement or CDL A (or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Vocational or technical training in equipment/vehicle repairs and/or electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Must pass federally mandated drug and alcohol screening, DOT physical, and substance screen prior to employment.

Mechanic Level I:

  • Six months to one year of working experience.
  • CFC license and CFC Refrigerant certification Type I and II (or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Must possess own tools.

Mechanic Level II:

  • Two years of working experience.
  • CFC license and Refrigerant certification Type I and II.

Mechanic Level IIII:

  • Three years of working experience.

Mechanic Level IV:

  • Four years of working experience.
  • EPA 609 certificate and Master ASE certification (A, H, or T Series).

Preferred:

  • DOT vehicle inspection certification (or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Some ASE Certification for Levels I-III.
  • CNG Fuel System Engine Certificate (or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Experience in public transit, municipal fleet, or commercial vehicle maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance, particularly diesel, gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
  • Proficiency with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and fuel systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and computerized vehicle diagnostic software.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle systems accurately.
  • Effective time management and task prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency assignments.

Essential Functions

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air brake, fuel systems, and diesel and gas engine issues.
  • Conduct and document required annual safety inspections and emissions tests.
  • Provide responsive customer service, including on-site repairs, after-hours support, and special service requests.
  • Maintain records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, parts usage, and warranty work.
  • Assist in managing parts inventory.
  • Operate a variety of shop equipment and diagnostic tools in accordance with safety and operational guidelines.
  • Work scheduled shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call or emergency assignments as required.
    Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following all applicable safety procedures and wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work Environment

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors across various facilities, including office buildings, warehouses, outdoor areas, rooftops, and confined spaces.
  • Work may involve proximity to sensitive or secure areas, including access control points, server rooms, and alarmed facilities.
  • Outdoor work may involve exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • The position may require working on or near equipment that generates moderate to loud noise, vibrations, dust, or fumes.
  • Work may involve exposure to loud noise, vibrations, odors, hazardous chemicals, and uneven or slippery surfaces.
    May be required to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as part of on-call rotations.

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility: Ability to move frequently throughout facilities, including walking, standing, climbing ladders, scaffolding, and work at heights when necessary for maintenance or inspections and navigating uneven surfaces.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally, with assistance as necessary.
  • Endurance: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various environments, including noisy, dusty, or hot/cold conditions, while maintaining focus on safety and quality.
  • Dexterity: Ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination including safely operating hand and power tools.
  • Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below waist level, and maintain awkward positions when performing work tasks.
  • Vision and Hearing: Ability to perform tasks that require visual acuity including distinguishing colors, sounds, and visual displays. Hearing ability to perceive verbal instructions, alarms, and equipment sounds in various work environments.
  • Occasional local travel within the County for meetings, trainings, or work at other locations.
