JOB SUMMARY:
The Unit Manager coordinates, manages, evaluates, and is accountable for 24-hour patient care, activities, nursing personnel, and unit operations on a designated unit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Administrative:
- Promotes and maintains an effective working relationship with physician/physician extenders, lab, and pharmacy to ensure proper and safe care of patients.
- Promotes and maintains an effective working relationship with nursing personnel, other departments, patients, families, and visitors.
- Demonstrates and ensures customer service standards are being met when interacting with employees, patients, and the general public. Addresses, complaints and follow-up as needed.
- Exhibits a professional demeanor, serving as a role model for licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants.
- Is knowledgeable of and participates in the Center's Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Program.
- Provides input on qualifications and staffing levels needed to meet the needs of the patients.
- Monitors employee's adherence to organization policies and procedures (e.g., absenteeism, dress code, etc.).
- Conducts monthly unit meeting with nursing personnel and communicates information and changes in Center policy and procedures when indicated. Provides in-service training as needed.
- Actively supports all Service Excellence Initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – Clinical
- Checks schedule each day to ensure adequate staffing. Assigns and delegates nursing personnel responsibilities for licensed and non-licensed nursing personnel.
- Evaluates and assesses patients on a regular basis. Ensures significant changes of the patient's condition are reported to the physician/physician extender and legal representative.
- Monitors to ensure that nursing documentation is appropriate, concise, and timely.
- Keeps the Director of Nursing, or designee informed of the status of patients and other related matters.
- Keeps the Director of Nursing, or designee informed of personnel concerns.
- Makes rounds with physicians/physician extenders as indicated to provide pertinent information regarding the patients care and condition and follows through with the physician/physician orders.
- Reviews physician/physician extender's orders, lab reports, and pharmacy contacts regarding any changes in medication.
- Communicates with family members regarding patients care and/or condition.
- Completes incident/accident reports, investigates, and conducts appropriate follow through regarding allegations of abuse or neglect, family/patient concerns and reported incidents/accidents involving nursing personnel.
a. Reports allegations of abuse/neglect, incidents/accidents to the Director of Nursing or designee.
b. Ensures notification regarding allegations of abuse/neglect, and other instances of incidents/accidents to the physician/physician extender and the patient's legal representative. - Ensures medications are administered according to physician/physician extender orders and consistent with current standards of practice.
- Assists licensed nurses with blood draws, initiating IV therapy and performing other standard nursing procedures or treatments when necessary.
- Reviews medication records for completeness, accuracy in the transcription of physician/physician extender orders and reviews adherence to stop-orders.
- Updates the daily patient Roster/Matrix.
- Participates in patient care conferences.
- Participates in center committees as assigned.
- Evaluates patients' status and unit activities at the beginning of the shift and ensures appropriate level of nursing personnel to care for patients.
- Performs frequent rounds on unit to evaluate nursing personnel performance and oversight of direct care performance.
- Validates adequate inventory and working condition of clinical supplies and equipment.
- Ensures patient assessments and care plans are reviewed/revised as indicated.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Licensed nurse in good standing with the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
- Previous nursing management or supervisory experience preferred.
- Demonstrates excellent clinical, customer service and leadership skills.
- Current CPR Healthcare Provider certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods standing, walking, working and frequently pulling, pushing, and bending
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time
- Must be able to move 150 pounds with assistance
