Senior Custodian

General Description:

This position is responsible for the cleaning and general maintenance of Town-owned buildings and facilities. Work includes cleaning offices, bathrooms, hallways; sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, empties trash, etc. The employee is subject to hazards in maintenance work, including working in both indoor and outdoor environments and exposure to cleaning solutions. Work is performed under general supervision, but is expected to exercise independent judgment. In addition to the skills and functions of a general custodian, the senior custodian will occasionally be assigned responsibility for various projects and/or team of workers. The position will be encouraged to gradually increase leadership responsibility within the Department. This position may require work during the week, weekends, holidays on occasions and some nights.

Duties and Responsibilities:

These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee may perform other related duties to meet the Town's ongoing needs.

• Sweeps, mops, vacuums and/or buffs floor surfaces.
• Cleans restrooms in various facilities including doors, toilets, sinks, floors, mirrors; replenishes supplies such as toilet paper, soap, paper towels, etc.
• Assumes responsibility for assigned projects and may lead others to perform assigned tasks
• Cleans stairwells and floors located in entryways, hallways, offices, etc.
• Empties trash and recycle receptacles, deposits them in their respective receptacles.
• Cleans glass doors, mirrors and windows.
• Mixes chemicals and cleaning supplies.
• Cleans a variety of surfaces in elevators, kitchens, break rooms, offices, hallways and public use spaces including doors, windows, sills, blinds, light fixtures etc.
• Performs inventory checks and stocks supplies.
• Monitors facilities to inspect for safety or maintenance problems, addresses or reports issues as necessary.
• Performs other duties of similar nature as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• General knowledge of cleaning methods, practices, materials and equipment.
• Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and supplies.
• Ability to make sound judgement calls and/or task decisions within the responsibility of the position
• Ability to read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.
• Must be detail oriented and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
• Skilled at operating various cleaning tools and equipment; cleaning and sanitizing surfaces.
• Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisor, general public and convey information in written and spoken form.
• Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor, requiring continuous physical effort.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must possess a valid driver's license
• Must have graduated High School or possess a GED

Physical Requirements:

This position is primarily stationed inside with some outside duties included. The employee is exposed to environmental conditions with various lighting, temperature and noise as well as outdoor conditions and may be exposed to weather elements including rain, wind, varying temperatures, etc. In addition, the employee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, fumes, unsanitary conditions, odors and loud noises. Must be able to physically perform basic life skills such as climbing, balancing, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform manual labor exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently; and up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
