Qualifying Questions (all disqualifying if no)

· Does your application reflect a bachelor's degree in a physical or natural science or engineering from an accredited college or university with no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of major course work in physical or natural sciences or engineering?

· This position requires travel throughout Miami-Dade County. Do you have a valid driver's license and have access to a private automobile to travel while performing work related assignments? (State reimbursement is 44.5 cents per mile for work-related travel)

· This position requires extensive walking, bending, and working in hot weather, and lifting and carrying equipment and supplies while performing work duties. Would you be willing to work under these conditions?

· Are you willing to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency? Emergency duty required of the incumbent of this position includes working in Special Needs or Red Cross Shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Duties and responsibilities

This is professional work involving the prevention of environmental illness caused by drinking water and/or wastewater. This also involves the prevention of and investigation concerning environmentally related disease and safety. The incumbent in this position is responsible for conducting compliance inspections in various program areas, acting independently with minimal supervision and assuming leadership for special projects. Inspects and reviews technical plans, as necessary, for compliance with the Florida Administrative Code specific to the program as well as input data in electronic database.

The environmental health programs include but are not limited to:

Drinking Water Programs (Super Act, Limited Use, Well Surveillance): Performs routine inspections and review plans and applications for operating permits for public water systems to determine compliance with F.S. and FAC. Coordinate and collect drinking water samples in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection and DOH-Bureau of Toxicology for groundwater chemical contamination. Assist all agencies and the public in remediation of contaminated wells. Review compliance reports and enter data in databases.

Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems: Perform necessary site evaluations, review plans, and approve the issuance of new construction and repair permits in a timely manner in accordance with Ch. 62 FAC Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems, Florida Administrative Code (FAC). Provide advice to homeowners and builders on F.S. and FAC permitting.

Nuisance Complaint Investigations: Investigate reports of sanitary nuisance complaints. Follow-up and assure corrective action have been taken or take necessary legal action.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of basic principles of environmental health or one of the natural or physical science, like biology, environmental studies, chemistry, including knowledge of scientific terminology and technology.

Skill in methods of data collection including the ability to collect, record, and analyze technical data relating to environmental health.

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policy and procedure related to environmental health, including enforcing regulation.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders and others in a stressful environment while providing total quality environmental health services.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to use technology such as computer software and cell phones.

Interpersonal Skills: shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, cooperation, concern, and politeness to others, relates well to different people from varied backgrounds and different situations.

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Bachelor's degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited college or university with no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of major course work in engineering or physical or natural sciences (engineering preferred).

Work Schedule: *

Monday – Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm
