Über

The Manager of Surgical Services provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for designated perioperative care areas across a 24/7 service line. This role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care by overseeing daily operations, staffing, workflow optimization, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the operating room, preoperative and postoperative units, and other assigned procedural environments.

The Manager fosters a culture of safety, service excellence, and regulatory readiness by upholding all Southeast Georgia Health System policies, state and federal regulations, Joint Commission standards, and national patient safety guidelines. Through proactive leadership, coaching, and team engagement, the Manager promotes a positive work environment and drives continuous performance improvement within Surgical Services.

Operational & Financial Leadership
  • Directs and supervises nursing and clinical support staff across assigned perioperative units, ensuring safe coverage 24/7.
  • Maintains departmental budgets through responsible staffing, resource allocation, charge capture accuracy, and equipment purchasing or leasing within established guidelines.
  • Collaborates with perioperative leadership to flex staffing based on case volume, acuity, and operational needs; provides direct patient care when clinically indicated.
  • Monitors supply chain processes, equipment functionality, and PAR levels to support seamless surgical operations and collaborates with Supply Chain to resolve equipment or inventory needs.
Clinical Quality, Safety & Compliance
  • Participates in routine evaluation of nursing care quality and clinical appropriateness; identifies performance gaps and leads unit-based improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with infection prevention protocols and maintains required documentation, audits, and reporting structures.
  • Works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and physician extenders to resolve patient care concerns and support optimal clinical outcomes.
  • Ensures all units maintain high standards of patient education, perioperative communication, and individualized teaching.
Patient Experience & Service Excellence
  • Identifies opportunities to enhance patient and family experience throughout the surgical continuum.
  • Develops and implements service-excellence initiatives that reinforce transparency, communication, and compassionate, patient-centered care.
  • Models professional behavior and promotes a warm, respectful environment that aligns with SGHS service excellence standards.
Talent Management, Education & Development
  • Ensures comprehensive orientation programs for all new team members in Surgical Services.
  • Develops unit-based retention and recruitment strategies, monitors turnover metrics, and leads initiatives to strengthen workforce stability.
  • Creates ongoing educational plans that promote professional growth, clinical competency, and certification readiness.
  • Provides coaching, mentorship, and progressive discipline as needed; ensures timely evaluations and ongoing feedback for all team members.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with individuals across the lifespan and varying educational and developmental levels.
Interdisciplinary Teamwork & Communication
  • Maintains open and collaborative communication with the Director of Surgical Services, executive leaders, surgeons, anesthesia teams, and ancillary departments.
  • Facilitates cohesive teamwork to ensure safe patient throughput, positive departmental relationships, and efficient perioperative scheduling and case management.
  • Addresses patient care concerns promptly and professionally, supporting physicians and staff in problem resolution.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing program required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field required.

Experience

  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressive leadership experience in an acute care setting, preferably within perioperative or surgical services.
  • Leadership development program completion or demonstrated leadership competencies required.
  • National clinical certification preferred.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current RN license in the State of Georgia.
  • American Heart Association BLS required within the first week of orientation and maintained throughout employment.
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, or relevant certifications required based on clinical area within six months of hire.
  • Experience with Cerner EHR preferred.
Physical, Mental & Environmental Requirements
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and patient-related mobility tasks.
  • High-level cognitive demands including attention to detail, multitasking, and extended concentration.
  • Exposure to blood/body fluids, hazardous chemicals, and temperature fluctuations typical of a perioperative environment
