The Role: Product Test Engineer

The Test Engineer plays a critical role within Newport's Product Development organization by ensuring products meet uncompromising standards for quality, safety, and performance before reaching customers. This role exists to protect the brand by validating that Newport's electric propulsion products perform reliably in real-world marine environments and comply with applicable industry standards and certifications.

As a core partner to engineering, operations, and quality teams, the Test Engineer helps establish confidence in new product launches and ongoing production by designing robust test strategies, strengthening quality control processes, and supporting certification readiness. This role directly contributes to Newport's reputation as a trusted leader in innovative and dependable boating propulsion.
This position is based in Carlsbad, CA (or willing to relocate), with availability for in-office work and occasional travel

Who We Are:

Newport is the leading innovator in next-generation electric small boat systems, delivering unrivaled experiences on the water for more than a decade. Built by anglers for anglers, our motors, batteries, and boats are designed to work together to maximize time on the water with power, efficiency, and reliability. At Newport, we build complete systems that eliminate the hassle and limitations of gas so you can focus on fishing. At Newport, the way forward is electric.

What You'll Do:

As the Product Test Engineer, you will design, execute, and document validation testing on prototypes and production samples across multiple stages of the product development lifecycle. This includes developing test specifications and procedures for both lab and field testing, evaluating materials and assemblies, and ensuring products perform safely and reliably in marine conditions such as saltwater, freshwater, heat, vibration, and sustained load.

You will own quality control and quality assurance activities related to testing and inspections, including managing third-party testing and pre-shipment inspections. This role involves defining inspection criteria, acceptable tolerances, and pass/fail conditions, as well as building repeatable processes that ensure consistent factory execution and catch issues before products ship.

You will also support cross-functional teams by answering product-related technical questions, reviewing test data and field feedback, and contributing to certification and compliance efforts. This includes aligning validation testing with marine safety standards, supporting documentation requirements, and collaborating with engineering and operations teams to address issues identified during testing or production.

Who You Are:

  • Hands-on test or quality engineer with experience validating electromechanical products
  • Strong foundation in electrical systems and product testing methodologies
  • Comfortable creating, executing, and documenting test plans
  • Detail-oriented with a high bar for quality, safety, and reliability
  • Able to work within structured processes while taking initiative when issues arise
  • Effective at written communication, including test reports and technical documentation
  • Collaborative across engineering, operations, and quality teams
  • Familiar with manufacturing environments, suppliers, and third-party inspections
  • Motivated by ensuring products perform reliably in real-world use
  • Based near Carlsbad, CA (or willing to relocate), with availability for in-office work and occasional travel
  • Carlsbad, California, United States
