Join Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP, a leading law firm with a rich history of defending healthcare providers in complex medical malpractice cases. We're seeking a dynamic Associate Attorney with a focus on
medical malpractice defense
to work alongside our experienced trial attorneys in representing hospitals, academic medical centers, and a broad spectrum of healthcare professionals. This position is available in our Midtown NY, White Plains, and Long Island offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Case Management:
Independently manage a substantial caseload of medical malpractice defense cases from inception to resolution, including drafting pleadings, discovery responses, and conducting legal research. - Discovery and Document Handling:
Draft, review, and respond to discovery documents and requests, ensuring thorough attention to detail and compliance with procedural requirements. - Court Appearances:
Regularly represent clients in court for hearings, conferences, and motions, demonstrating strong advocacy and strategic skills. - Depositions:
Prepare for and take/defend depositions of plaintiffs, experts, and witnesses to support defense strategy. - Client Interaction:
Maintain frequent, clear, and professional communication with clients, providing case updates, risk assessments, and strategic guidance. - Motion Practice:
Draft, file, and argue motions, including motions to dismiss, for summary judgment, and other dispositive and pre-trial motions. - Collaboration with Senior Attorneys:
Work closely with Partners and other senior attorneys on complex legal projects, offering insights, conducting case analyses, and helping refine litigation strategies.
Candidate Qualifications
- Education:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school. - Licensure:
Admission to the New York State Bar. - Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of civil litigation experience, with a strong preference for medical malpractice defense.

- Legal Expertise: Deep understanding of medical malpractice defense law, with the ability to apply legal principles to a wide array of case types.
- Research and Analytical Skills: Proficient in legal and medical research, with a keen ability to interpret complex medical records and apply them in defense strategies.
- Organizational Abilities: Proven ability to handle and prioritize a high volume of cases, ensuring efficiency and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Initiative and Independence: Self-starter who takes ownership of tasks and seeks proactive solutions, with minimal supervision.
- Team Orientation: Works effectively within a collaborative team environment, bringing value through cooperation, idea-sharing, and a commitment to achieving favorable outcomes.
Target Salary Range
$100,000 - $150,000
Salaries vary by location and are based on numerous factors, including, but not limited to, the relevant market, skills, experience, and education of the selected candidate. Our compensation package also includes bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits program.
