Job Summary

The Associate Engineer for Substation Engineering & Design will be part of the team responsible for performing engineer, design, construction and project management assistance on large-scale electric substation projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and support to operations, project management, planning, power, marketing/sales departments, and as well as external customers in support of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Transmission & Distribution system.
  • Evaluate the application and use of materials, equipment and new technologies for LIPA's electrical substations.
  • Provide engineering services for construction/upgrade of electric substations and related facilities based upon reliability and economy with consideration to operations, economics, safety and maintenance requirements.
  • Develop material, engineering design, construction specifications/associated drawings, and standards as required for successful completion of assigned projects.
  • Develop, review and revise standards as a result of recommendations by industry associations (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, etc.) related to state of the art materials and engineering/operating methods.
  • Participate in R&D initiatives, evaluate and procure new materials/equipment to improve performance of the electric T&D system.
  • Work with internal and external organizations/customers to ensure prudent engineering solutions are undertaken to special engineering and construction projects.
  • Perform budget/project cost estimates, develop project justifications, and participate in root cause analysis, special engineering studies, investigations and calculations as required.
  • Represent the department, LIPA, and company, at regulatory, community and industry meetings.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Knowledge of engineering and design analysis
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications
  • Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills; strong planning and organizing skills; adaptable and results-oriented
  • Department of Energy's regulation 10 CFR 810 is required

Desired:

  • BSEE
  • Experience in engineering design and analysis of electric transmission systems.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and TeamCenter Enterprise.
  • A strong understanding of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), and other relevant guidelines for electric transmission system design and operation. Working knowledge of Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) guidelines is also required.

If applicable, the successful applicant must prove they are: (1) a citizen or national of the USA; OR (2) a lawful permanent resident of the United States (Non-Conditional Permanent I-551 / Green Card / Permanent Resident Card holder); OR (3) a citizen, national, or permanent resident of a "Generally Authorized" destination on the attached list and not also a citizen, national, permanent resident of any country not listed; OR (4) a "Protected Individual" under the Immigration and Naturalization Act (8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3)).

As an employee of PSEG Long Island, you should be aware that during storm/outage restoration efforts, you may be required to perform functions different from normal operations and work extended hours beyond your regular work schedule. You may also be required to work on premise or in an alternate location as directed by the company.
