Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of one or more certified special education teacher(s), assist in the implementation of individualized educational programs for students with mild to moderate disabilities in resource or general education settings.

Essential Functions
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays

Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments

Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher

Assist in supporting individual students or small groups of students in general education classrooms

Assist in the implementation of behavior intervention plans for individual students as needed

Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers when needed

Assist the teacher in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports

Prepares instructional materials and classroom displays

Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students

Keep the teacher informed of any communication from parents

Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy

Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom

Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom

Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment

Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed

Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities
None

EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer, printer, copier, technology equipment and devices as acquired by the district

Occasional use of specialized equipment, as appropriate

WORKING CONDITIONS

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking and reaching

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment. Also may require some "on the floor" activities with very young of physically disabled students. The applicant may be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory student.

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases) In addition, some students will need assistance with personal hygiene including toileting and diapering. Applicant will be routinely exposed to biological hazards and bodily fluids associated with toileting and diapering. Applicant may also be routinely exposed to students who exhibit physical and verbal aggression toward staff that is directly linked to the child's disability. The applicant would be expected to routinely assist in the implementation of individualized behavior intervention plans that are designed to decrease the aggressive behaviors.

Mental Demands: Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written); maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: May require extensive standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Applicant should be able to move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. The applicant may also require some "on the floor" activities with young students, control behavior through physical restraint or assist nonambulatory students. On occasion, some students will need assistance with personal hygiene including toileting and diapering. Applicant may be exposed to biological hazards and bodily fluids associated with toileting and diapering.

Other: Position may require the employee to work with students who have one or more of the following disabilities: autism, emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, mentally impaired, medically fragile, visual or hearing impaired, speech impaired, or orthopedically impaired. Work as a team member and with peers, teachers, campus personnel and principals; professional demeanor, resourcefulness, communicate effectively with diverse groups and accept supervision; work without day-to-day supervision; regular and punctual attendance at the workplace.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluations of At-Will employees.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Experience
Some experience working with children preferred

Requirements
Education / Certification:

High School Diploma or GED equivalency and a minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit or an Associates Degree

Certification by another school district of meeting the NCLB "Highly Qualified by assessment" requirements will be accepted in lieu of college credit

Educational Aide Certificate from the State Board for Educator Certification within one year of employment

Special Knowledge and Skills

Ability to work well with children with various disabilities

Ability to communicate effectively

General knowledge of office equipment

Attend training and gain certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention training (CPI) and maintain that certification annually
